Carry-on: need help understanding something
 

Hello everyone!

So I finally decided to fly with Air Transat for my upcoming trip to London. I was set on only bringing my carry-on and a purse, but then I read something confusing on their website.

CARRY-ON WEIGHT

For flights going to and from the United States and the UK (INCLUDING Belfast, Dublin and Shannon in the Republic of Ireland): 5 kg (11 lb.)

All other destinations 10 kg (22 lb.)

So... does that mean to 5kg carry-on is ONLY for flights between the US and the UK? Or is it for any flights that departs or arrives in either the US or the UK? I'm flying from Canada.

Do they actually weight the carry-on? 5kg is a ridiculously small allowance.

It should mean:

1. flights between Canada and the US; and

1. flights between Canada and the UK.

They don't fly between US and UK.

I can't address Air Transat specifically, but we flew with, I think it was British Air, and they had a similar limit - and yes, they weighed our carry-ons. I have a feeling it might be hit or miss, though, and you could get lucky. Then again, maybe not. I wouldn't count on being able to carry on more than the weight they say.

I believe that most of what we call carryon bags in the US weigh 8-9 lbs EMPTY. Do they really mean 11 lbs???? I believe my purse may weigh 11 lbs!

Also a past BA passenger when they had same restriction. Getting on and off an enormous jet was faster than any other trip I have ever made since people were not lugging all sorts of nonsense on board. And, yes - they did weigh obviously oversized bags and they really did mean 11 pounds. Think large handbag or canvas bag, not traditional US "carry-on"

Air Transat is one of few airlines in the world that put 3-3-3 seating on an Airbus. (A310 and 330-220 only; their 330-300 are traditional 2-4-2). That means higher density, and more passengers with other airlines with the same amount of overhead luggage space. There's no way they can let every passenger carry a 22" rollaboard.
