I'm looking for help in finding products that will pass through security. As I have never checked luggage, I don't want to start however, I don't want to cause problems either. I know that no lotions and gels are allowed and am trying to find alternatives that are. For instance, stick deoderant? treated facial cleansing pads (dry until you add water)? Does anyone have ideas for sunscreen, mascara, guess lipstick is now allowed. I'd love some suggestions. Most hotels offer shampoo and lotion. Is anyone else going to continue just with carry-on?

If you're going to buy all these special products specifically for the trip, then why not wait until you get to your destination and buy them there? If you buy trial size for most, you can toss any leftovers before your return flight.

Heading to China tomorrow and not checking a bag.

The only concern I had is my contact solution. For such a long flight I like to take my contacts out and wear glasses a few hours into the flight. I was able to find both a cleaner and solution in 1 oz bottles, which will allow me to be under the 4 oz limit. Only personal hygiene items I will have in my bag will be solid deodorant, and razor. I will buy what my hotel can't provide once I arrive.

Whats the word on cameras. Are they still allowed to be carried on?

Digital cameras (and all electronics) are still allowed in carry-ons. This aplies even to UK flights now. However, if there are further incidents, you might be asked to pack electronics in checked luggage again.

For globecirler, stick deoderant is NOT allowed, but you could get one of those crystal sticks. I usually travel with one and really like it. They're sold at Whole Foods and most natural foods stores, as well as some regular drug stores now. There are packaged sunscreen towelettes that might be allowed. I'm sorry, but I can't tell yo much about mascara. There are tooth powders that could take the place of toothpaste. And there are those Oral B things that go on the ends of your fingers (not sure what they are called).

Anything dry and packaged will probably be allowed, but you have to allow for the usually inconsistencies among security people.

As of yesterday, mascara NOT allowed.

I've printed out allowed/not allowed articles on TSA and AA (which we will be flying next month) websites, of course, who knows what regs will be by then. However, even though I'm pretty well versed in what is allowed onboard, what can I carry it in? Will my usual tote bag (correct size to be placed under seat) be allowed? And can I take my purse onboard? Had heard earlier (after the London terrorist threat) that only clear plastic bag would be allowed, with wallet, passport, etc. inside. Any info on what I can carry onboard would be appreciated.

Giovanna, it all depends on whether you are on a flight to or through the UK. On those flights, airlines are still strongly restricting cabin baggage. As of today, you can take 1 bag and no more, and it must be a small bag no larger than a typical briefcase. On domestic flights, I think things are back to normal, and on most other international flights, most people are able to carry on the same size bags as always. But the liquid/gel restrictions apply almost everywhere in the world now, and you will always have a particularly strict screener applying his or her own limits that go well beyond what the TSA officially allows.

To be honest, I'd recommend that you wait and figure out your carry-on situation in a couple of weeks when things are back to normal (assuming no more security incidents). I think the new guidelines will be solidified by then. But you should still not expect to take any toiletries or liquids on your flight, wherever it goes.

You can buy "cake mascara" which is dry and comes with a brush. My favorite is Longcils Boncza (French brand) and I'm posting a link to one of the places that sells it on-line (I'm not recommending this outlet and don't know anything about them. I've only bought this mascara from a store).

The Vermont Country Store sells a similar product for $14.90 but I'm not familiar with it.

I'd be very wary of taking expensive "cake" mascara. The screeners at some airports may not be familiar with it and might confiscate it anyway since "mascara" is on the no-go list. What I'm worried about are the over-eager, uninformed screeners that I've read about who still confiscate knitting needles, nail files on nail clippers, etc. There are more of these than I like to think of, and if they say you can't take something on a plane, it's likely that their supervisors will back them up in my experience, whether or not the item is actually on the banned list.

A couple of days ago I read on TSA.gov that stick (solid) deodorant was allowed. Today there is a list of prohibited makeup/toileteries.
"Deodorants made of gel or aerosol," no mention of solids. It might be worth trying to take a small solid stick deororant.

Solid stick deodorants are allowed. 3 times this week at 3 different airports TSA picked mine up looked at it and put it back in my bag. To make thing simple I placed all my toiletries in a large zip top bag so they didn't need to rummage through all my stuff to get to it.

Doug must be a "young thang" to not know that all mascara was cake (loved the Maybelline cake mascara) at one time. Hopefully, your screener will be an older female that wore makeup in the 60's or before. For a cheaper cake mascara, check out La Femme on Amazon.com for $6.95. This will look just like a cake of eyeshadow and it will last much longer than regular mascara.

I'm not that young, but I haven't had much first-hand mascara knowledge, so I'll have to defer to those who are better informed than I on such matters. Thanks so much for the link to the article! That is a huge help. I have been looking for cake mascara for ten years. Clinique used to make a great one, but quit doing so, much to the dismay of their clients.

There are many suggestions in this article that are great. Thanks for bringing it to our attention!

kybourbon, I also thought he must be young not to have heard of cake mascara. Thanks for the info on the less expensive brands.

In the long run, cake mascara is cheaper and if you are an infrequent user (like myself) has a better shelf life. Good link Doug.

What about asthma inhalers????

Non-prescription asthma inhalers are supposed to be allowed (as are small amounts of all non-prescription drugs, liquid or not); prescription medications of all kinds are allowed, but they should be labeled. Though this labeling requirement has technically always been the law and is not a new requirement, it's one that is only being enforced of late.

However, I must stress that screeners throughout the world are annoyingly inconsistent. One thing may be allowed at one airport but not another, and it doesn't really matter what the TSA web site says; you're really at the mercy of the individual screener.

I suggest that if you have a liquid or aerosol nonprescription medication that you feel you can't do without, get a doctor's note if it's a medical necessity that you carry the item with you.

Ok so now with the new guidelines, can I carry on my mascara?

Yes Penndale you can carry on your mascara (3 oz. or less) if you put the container in a see-through quart size zip-lock bag with your other toiletries.

Go to www.tsa.gov for a list of permitted and banned items.

Just returned home yesterday and we were able to purchase water after the security check (sterile area) and take it on board. Small amounts (I think 4 ozs) of lotion, toothpaste, perfume, etc. are also now permitted Apparently the FBI concluded that small amounts of liquid couldn't bring down an airplane, a fact I was convinced of in the beginning of all this restricted foofderah! Isn't science amazing? And the election only two months away--what a coincidence.

Has anyone flown internationally recently? I am planning a trip and I have read everything and it is still unclear. Can I take my hair dryer, curling iron and mascara onboard in my carry on? Thanks

I carried a curling iron, hair dryer, mascara on board both directions in October. No problem with the curling iron and hair dryer. I forgot to put the mascara in the quart ziplock on the way home and security removed it from my makeup bag and put it in the ziplock bag. Maybe I was just lucky that day.

I'm not planning on ever (hopefully) checking luggage, as I know too many people who have had their luggage lost, so.....in a few weeks I'm going to AZ and need to bring my asthma inhalers plus a nasal spray, all prescription drugs. I have the original packages with my name on. My question is, I have not traveled since the new rules....I know that I can put my liquid products such as makeup, hairspray, and the like in 3 oz. containers in a quart bag for screeing, but you are only allowed 1 of these bags per person.

What about my prescription inhalers? How do I present these to the screeners if I cannot use another quart baggie? Thanks for your suggestions and help!

Only one ziplock bag per person. If they won't fit in one bag, then 'check' the things that you will not need for the flight. If you are flying with a partner, maybe it would fit in their bag. Otherwise, expect to see your things that don't fit in the ziplock bag placed in the trash.

If this is a problem, check the schedules for Amtrak and Greyhound.

Sorry, but TSA has heard every excuse in the book.

Don't worry about your medicine, inhalers, etc. Those are in additional to the quart-size bag. You won't have problems. Keep your medicine stuff together so that they can inspect them easily, if needed.

Our most recent flights were last November, so I assume nothing has changed since then. We put all our medications (both prescription and over-the-counter in their original containers, including an inhaler)in a zippered cotton bag. That bag is placed in my husband's carry-on bag. We've never had a problem clearing security.

Perhaps if I get a note from my doctor, I can bring my bottle of wine through security?
