Canceling due to flu
Hi. I was wondering what is the best money saving way to cancel on a flight. I have a Jet Blue ticket to Ft. Lauderdale leaving this Friday. Is it better to cancel now or wait to see if I improve and go at the last minute?

most insurance won't give a refund unless you have a doctors form filled out.

Steve,

I would contact the airlines right away and ask them what you should do. Be sure they understand if your not ready to cancel at the time of that call.

If it is a non-refundable ticket, you may need to get to the doctor and have documentation that you were too ill to travel. You will then stand a chance at a possible refund, less any penalties, and possibly without penalty, or perhaps a voucher for the full amount of the ticket.

Thanks for the help. I'm feeling better, but I'll give JB a call anyway.

If you have a non-refundable ticket, you will NOT be able to get a refund, even with a doctor's letter. But with that letter, the airline will create a credit for you, and MAY waive the $100 change penalty. Contact their consumer affairs office first, and start there. I have just today gone througg this same procedure, and I can tell you that the airline telles me they have been burned many times by the abuse of the last-minutes illness excuse, and they are very suspicious. Be sure to get that letter from your doctor, and FAX it to the correct office at the airline. I found that the airline was willing to make the credit available for two years, but that I must renew it yearly. Be nice to the airline - you will be on their turf - you are not able to demand anything. Ciao, L

Steve,
We send our clients requests via certified mail, return receipt requested. No possible way for them to use the excuse, "We never received your request". Feel better soon.
