The Canadian federal government has listened to complaints about Air Canada and other Canadian carriers refusing to refund cash for flights cancelled because of the pandemic.

The transportation minister said Sunday that financial relief for the strapped airlines will depend on refunds replacing mandatory vouchers.

Much complaining has been heard, especially about Air Canada, the biggest. It has claimed, elsewhere, to have refunded on cancelled flights to and from the US and Europe, where governments have

required refund rather than vouchers. Policies have varied with other Canadian airlines but not enough to quiet the objections.

It really wouldn't bother me if an airline gave me a credit rather than a refund, unless I thought I were never going to fly again in my life. I don't understand why people can't be more cooperative given the unusual circumstances. Besides, the OP said they were complying with the law.

I feel it should be the government’s job to protect the airline industry NOT the passengers. Covid has also adversely impacted small business people and individuals, and many of them are passengers.

We chose refunds instead of vouchers from six different airlines in the US and Europe, where the regulatory bodies supported the consumer. It was not a question for us whether we planned to fly again. Some, like us, are unsure if we might fly on a particular airline again. And, if governments don’t step in, some airlines might collapse, even with vouchers, and then how much will those be worth?
