Can you break your flight?
 

Hi, Have a LOT of plane travel coming up in the USA and just wanting to know if you can break your trip and does it cost more? For example, just say I was flying LAX - New York and I booked a flight which changed planes in Denver. Could I stay a night or two in Denver and then continue with my ticket to New York?

You'll MUST contact the airline directly and make the change ahead of time. For just about any airline except Southwest there is a substantial change fee, from $150 to 250 PER ticket, plus any change in airfare.

If you skip the ongoing leg from Denver to NY you will forfeit the last leg & lost the ticket.

If you haven't booked your flights already, just use the Multicity option on the website of your preferred option. You can play around with different itineraries and dates to find out cost without having to actually book. Of course, if you want to use different airlines it is more complicated and you are best using a travel agent.

eliztravels2 is correct. Play around with kayak's multi-city destination option -- they automatically include different airlines in their results.

If you have already booked your ticket, you may have to pay a fee to change the ticket plus the fare difference (but that depends on what fare class you booked). Or you could get lucky and the continuing leg of your flight might be oversold and you can volunteer to get bumped.
