Cameras?

With all the new restrictions I presume that we now have to pack our cameras in our checked luggage. My husband will have a melt down!! We are flying from Detroit to Heathrow to Johannesburg. Any tips on how to avoid it being stolen out of our bags?

In your case, that is correct, you will have to check in EVERYTHING, as flights out of UK do not allow any checked luggage at the moment.

Some people suggest taking pictures of the inside of your luggage and placing a copy of it inside, so the thief would see that you have proof of what's inside. Will that stop a thief? maybe not, but at the very least you would have something to show to the airline and or insurance company. Also, cable ties to secure the expensive toys to the inside of your luggage, again not a foolproof guarantee, but making it more difficult for the thief. Travel insurance is the thing to do at the moment.

Also, the carry on restrictions for flights originating in UK will not be permanent, so depending on when you fly, it may not have any meaning to you.

Have a great trip!

SAA says I can bring my digital camera and batteries on with me

If you can bring your computer on the plane (with batteries that can go up in flames) I would think you could bring a camera.

To the last 2 posters:

The question was asked 10 days ago, right after 8/10 and at that time ANY flight going out of UK did not ALLOW any carryons, with the exception of wallet and passport and these 2 items had to be in a clear plastic bag.

So, please read the question and look at the date of posting before bringing up the thread and adding something to it that's not relevant anymore. :-)

To AAFrequentFlyer:

I thought it would bother you. That's why I did it. :-D

It's just not a perfect world.

wally,

it really doesn't bother me, but it may confuse people that don't fly very often and are looking for answers here.

It's just my opinion, but if the thread is not relevant anymore it should be left alone. Only threads that are still valid for one reason or another should be topped, but then again, I'm not a Fodor's editor or owner.

Just my opinion and you don't have to agree. :-)

I thought it was a good thing that mommywels and Wally posted, Someone could have easily pulled this thread up and not realized that things had changed so fast.
