Buy a Rountrip ticket--but take another flight home?

I've found flights I want on United going from Kansas City through SFO to China. I want to come back through SFO because the flight times/plane are better. However, the flight from SFO to Kansas City is terrible (12 hours after arriving in SFO)

The United flight is much cheaper if I buy the roundtrip ticket and I can get a reasonable Frontier flight back to KC at a great time (still plenty of time for customs) for $150.

How risky is it to take the Frontier flight and "skip" the UA flight from SFO-Kansas City? I should have my luggage when we go through customs, so I would be able to fully re-check in with Frontier.

Zero risk unless you do it repeatedly.

Well, not quite zero. Risk with UA is zero, but if the China to SFO flight is late you run the risk of missing either the check in time, baggage drop off time, or gate closed time for your Frontier flight, forcing you to buy a new same day ticket that may wipe out your cost savings.

Here are some things you can do to lessen that risk.
1. check in with Frontier online before you leave China. If you have carry on bags only you just need to be at the gate by door closed time. I'm not sure how strict Frontier is with baggage drop off times.

2. If you are at risk of missing any Frontier cutoff then you should call them BEFORE the flight. You may be able to roll over to a same day standby for $0 to nominal fee. You aren't supposed to use cell phones before you exit customs, but I see people on cell phone anyway.

If the flight to SFO is late, then just take the confirmed and paid-for UA flight 12 hours back home!
