British Airway Miles - can they be transfered to a family member?

My dear FIL has over 100,000 miles he would like to give us.

Does anyone know if that is possible?

Thank you.

I did a search on BA's website on "gifting miles". this is the response:

Question
Can I transfer or gift some of my miles to a friend?

Answer
Executive Club miles may not be transferred to a different Executive Club account. If you would like to give someone the gift of free British Airways travel, as an individual member you may redeem miles for free award travel for your friends or family.
If you are enrolled in a Household Account you can only redeem miles towards a free award to another member in the same account.

Thank you, yk.

If you would like to give someone the gift of free British Airways travel, as an individual member you may redeem miles for free award travel for your friends or family.

So if I read this correctly, the answer would be "yes"...

I wonder if my FIL would have to be the one to actually do the booking, or can his son do it for him (with his full knowledge, of course).

I don't know the answer for BA. As for AA and Continental, I know I can book a ticket for myself using my family members' miles, as long as I know their account # and PIN.

The main thing is that your FIL cannot just transfer the miles to YOUR account.

Thanks, yk. My husband thought it was just a matter of transfering the miles to his account. I didn't think that would be the case. I don't know for sure, but I think BA might be flexible with the booking. I had to intervene with my inlaw's last flight booking -- in any case, we have their pin and account numbers.

Thanks again.

You asked if you can give miles - the answer is no - but you can give tickets to anyone. When FF miles started ages ago, first it was the FF person who had to use the miles, then they expanded it to immediate family - but soon after that it was that you could book a ticket using the miles for anyone.

As long as the miles can be used to "purchase" tickets for someone other than the account holder, that works for me.

My husband, my son and myself are all in a 'Household Account'. We can pool miles, which is really great & any one of the three of us can use the miles. Call BA Ex Club & ask them to make your's, your husband's, and your FIL's acct a Household acct.
