Bike in a box Qs

Any info on airlines carrying a bicycle disassembled in a large box? Hoping to fly to IR later this year, from SE Asia, and tour the green island, then hop a ferry to FR for wine county cycling. Will be going 'open-jaw' and what airlines not decided. It's the bike that's the headache.

Brompton makes travel cases for their bikes.

It varies from airline to airline. As cdnyul noted, AA treats one bike as "standard baggage allowance", which for me (with an AA credit card) means I can travel on AA with my road bike checked for free. I borrowed a hard sided case from a friend and the case weighs more than the bike so no issues with the weight allowance.

I also did this once on Lufthansa to Europe and I don't recall if they charged me or not. For the limited use I got on that trip I've now determined that unless I'm riding 500-1000km or so, or perhaps riding a race and I want my own bike it's going to be easier to rent at my destination. I've had good luck renting carbon road bikes in Malta, Belgium and in Germany, and at various US locations from a specialty / local bike shop. I've found that the staff at a shop like that are all riders themselves and will go out of their way to help a fellow roadie. That includes links to GPS routes or hooking up with group rides which is a plus in an unknown location.

On one trip to CA I was able to borrow one of their new Trek demo bikes for the day, gratis which was nice. For each trip it took some sleuthing to find a place but once I did the it worked out great. I know a 54cm frame in most models will fit me ok and I bring my own pedals & saddle pack/repair kit/ tools.
