I usually travel international, so it has to be a tiny carry on for further travel in Europe. Two changes of underwear, socks and tops. 3-1-1 bag, meds, comb, eye mask, ipad, chargers, leads and voltage adapter, Clorox wipes, magazine or book. Anything else can go in a largish handbag.

Anything that I can't afford to lose whether it's irreplaceable or valuable

re mouthwash -- Listerine makes Pocketpack strips that dissolve in your mouth.
but the cough drops & Altoids work just as well.

Best advice for carryon is carryon everything. I've traveled to europe and china for several weeks with just a small carryon size suitcase and a tote bag. This way you NEVER lose your luggage and NEVER have to wait for your luggage.
