Bars on Planes
 

I've read where several airlines now have bars on their planes. Ususally these flights are on 747's and A340 for long hall. What a great idea. Stand up, stretch your legs and talk to a few of the passengers. I heard that Qantas was one of these. I doubt if the U.S. carriers would do this since they like to keep the "Fasten Seat Belt Sign" on during the entire flight.

Does anyone know what other airlines are doing this?

The only ones I know of are on Virgin Atlantic flights in Upper Class.

Yes, as far as I know and experienced, Virgin Atlantic offers the bar service. It is excellent and yes, a very good way to relax and stretch your body after sitting for hours on a long flight. What did bother me was a passanger that appeared to be brunk and the bar tender still kept serving him drinks. Sometimes, one more drink is one too many.

The bar service is only available if you fly first class (or Upper Class as it is known at Virgin Atlantic). As well as the bar, you can also have a neck massage and a manicure.

Weren't bars more common on commercial aircraft in the 70's? I remember my mom always having a cocktail at the airplane bar when we traveled during the time I was a kid.

I remember also in the early 70's flying from Detroit to California on a 747 and going back to see my dad at the bar!

Yes, in the 70's some airplanes had bars. In addition, one 747 I flew on had revolving seats in the middle section of first class, so they could turn the seats to face each other, put a circular table between them and have a real dining experience.
