Bankrupt USAIR Vouchers

What happens to Vouchers for flights if the are booked before USAIR files for bankruptcy?
Are theY useless if USAIR is in bankruptcy and then you try to use them? It looks very grim for USAIR.

As long as they are flying, your vouchers should be good. The question seems to be, if they again file Chapter 11 banckruptcy, will they have to liquidate. The betting by the experts seems to think liquidation.

Better use those vouchers quickly.

Not a question of "if" but "when".....this article thinks it might be this Sunday....

You may have to work very quickly-- rumors are flying about a bankruptcy declaration on Sunday. Fire Sale to follow-- at this point, they may be forced to go into Chapter 7....

BeachBoi, you beat me to the punch again...! ;)

rjw.....It's hard to stay ahead of you, mah man...actually I heard on one of the Dallas TV stations early shows this morning that there was a strong likelihood of pretty swift liquidation....any truth there? I didnt pay that much attention to the report.

My son and I each have about 24,000 miles in our Dividend Miles accounts. We are booked on an SAS (one of USAirs partner airlines) for a flight to Europe in two weeks. Anybody have any idea if our points can be transferred over or used for an upgrade on the SAS flight? I've tried calling both airlines and can't get through. I imagine things are just a little chaotic for them right now. Any suggestions of how to quickly use our points would be appreciated. Thanks!

UH-UH - Too bad I hadn't read this post sooner! This morning I purchased thru Orbitz 6 tickets on US Airways to Ireland for next July for family members. What should I do,what can I do????? Help, please!! Will Orbitz offer any help? can I cancel though the credit card company? (And I'm presuming I shouldn't purchase the next five tickets I was about to order for another family group?!!:(

You know, BeachBoi, the problem with USAir is that their assets are not attractive enough for their competitors to pay top dollar to buy them, which is why the Chapter 7 liquidation sale will be like an "irregulars" sale at K-Mart. Southwest might snap up a few more gates at PHL, maybe Delta might take a few at CLT; AirTran and American might get a gate or two in PIT. All those Airbuses? I can't think of a US-based carrier using Airbus 330s, but the 320 family jets can go to United, Frontier and Northwest (and maybe JetBlue).

I have a gut feeling that the Dividend Miles program will be the first thing abandoned after Sunday (note the disclaimers on all these FF programs' paperwork: "Carrier reserves the right to suspend or terminate Program at any time"). Buried in among the layoffs and flight cancellations....

There is a last ditch effort being made tonight to settle contract.

Flyboy Sep 10th, 2004 02:54 PM

GmaMcD, is there any kind of a 24-hour policy with Orbitz? I know with some airlines, you can cancel without penalty within 24 hours.

GmaMcD: Call Orbitz PDQ and also call credit card company.

rkkwan Sep 10th, 2004 03:08 PM

rjw - NWA is gradually replacing all its Europen flight from DC10 to 330-300, and have just started 330-200 service from the West Coast to NRT.

GmaMcD - Definitely call Orbitz. Booking tickets to Ireland for next July on any airline is a bad idea, and particularly on USAirways.

Message: Thanks!! I called Orbitz, got the USAir flights cancelled without problem, minus the service fee - that's OK, better than losing the whole thing! Appreciate the help from this site!
RKKWAN -do you really think it's a bad idea to book for next July? I'd like to get it settled. Since I'm trying to get 29 of us (kids, grandkids) to Ireland from five different states, I'm afraid waiting might mean "he who hesitates is lost"- -and we need the best possible prices with so many. (Those US Air prices sure looked good !!)

(I wrote this yesterday but for some reason it didn't seem to appear on the message board so am "pasting" it here again. And thanks again!)

GmaMcD - A lot can happen in 2 months, let alone ten. USAirways may not exist at that time, and Delta may have cut back on its service. Who knows. One really doesn't need to book this far ahead, so I'll wait a little, at least till late fall or early spring. Those are slow times for airlines - so they want your money then, not now, and you'll usually find better deals.

rjw_lgb_ca Sep 15th, 2004 08:16 AM

rkkwan: Interesting to hear that. I've never seen the NWA 330s at LAX (I drive by every day going to work), but they may come in at times I'm not there. I'm sure I'll see them soon enough (I get a bigger thrill when I see a shiny DC 8-72 landing-- those skinny old birds still look cool!).

Still, what a mess for USAir.... I'm glad I stopped relying on them for travel (I'll pay extra to fly connecting service out of my hometown airport, LGB). They were awful when their financial condition was good...!

As far as I know the BIG 6 have the same policy but some do it differently than others. When US Congress held hearings on airline customer service back in 1999 and the airlines got scared that government regulations may come back in some form or other, they decided to initiate their own customer friendly policy to keep the government off their backs (remember that?) Basically they all agreed to keep most of the customer friendly regulations that were in force before deregualtion. But since these were not government rules anymore they were all allowed to change/adjust the rules to fit their buisness model best.

When the airlines were government regulated one of the most important rules was the 24 hour cancellation right. So, some just kept the rule as it was, but others (AA that I know for sure), decided to change it just a bit. What AA allows you to do is to put a reservation on HOLD for 24 hours. Personally I prefer it this way and I'll tell you why. I could put a res on hold with the guarantee of the the booked fare and not have my CC charged, while I'm deciding if I should/could/want to/got the right dates/etc.. before I finalize the res. My credit money is not floating around for days/weeks and I still have the so-called 24 hour cooling period. The others will charge your CC when you make the res and they will refund if you cancel within 24 hours, but at that point the money is floating around for some time before it gets credited back to your CC.

rjw - All of NW's 330-300 are used on European routes, and all of NW's new 330-200s are used for NRT. Initially, the 332 are basically replacing the ancient DC-10s from SFO, SEA and PDX, as well as certain routes from NRT to rest of Asia.

LAX doesn't get any European routes, and LAX's right now getting one 747-200 flight to NRT, I don't see you guys getting any of the 330s any time soon.

Also keep in mind that the 330-200 have fewer seats than even the DC10s.
