Bags check through on overnight stop in Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific?
hello,
We have a less than 24 hour, overnight layover from Bangkok to New York on Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong. Does anyone know if the bags are checked through and held or do they have to be retrieved? We are thinking of just bringing a change of clothes and the bare essentials in a daypack, and leaving the rest checked at the airport to make the most of our short layover. I have gotten 2 different answers when I called the airlines. Anyone have experience with this? thanks!

Just judging it on my own experience.
CX will check your bags all the way through and I did not have any problems. I had about a 16 hour layover in HKG.
The CX lounges made it very much bearable after a visit to the city.

Okay to check bags throught to final destination if the arrival and departure in the layover airport take place on SAME calendar day.
But if not, you'll have to retrieve bags and then check in again next day.
AAFF - was it on same calendar day?
The airport in HKG should have left luggage lockers or place for you to put your bags overnight. We did that in Oslo airport when we were on our way from LHR to North Norway - left our large bags in left luggage place at airport and took overnight case into Oslo.
Can rwkwan answer this?

The above "same calendar day" statement is not necessarily nor universally correct. I have changed planes in an international city landing at about 11 PM and leaving at 6 AM and bags were easily checked through.
What is correct is that baggage checking procedures depend on the airline and the airport, often are a function of the current security situation, and that's why you will get different answers.
