Baggage Transfer and Time?

I will be travelling internationally for the first time this Tuesday. I will be departing from DTW to YYZ in Toronto via AirCanada. I have a 1 hour, 30 minute layover in YYZ. From there, I am on Ethiopian Airlines (the rest of the journey) to Rome's FCO, where I have 50 minutes. From there, I go to ADD (Addis Ababa) for 1 hr connection time and I arrive in another African country later. My question is one concerning two things:
1. Will I have to go through any type of passport control at any of the stops? I've heard I have to go through some kind of system at FCO?
2. Since AirCanada and Ethiopian are both members of Star Alliance will my baggage transfer/check through to my final African destination, or should I anticipate a collect and recheck at some point?
