Auckland/London/Vienna -- Where will we clear customs & immigration?
We will be flying from Auckland to Vienna via LHR. We will have an approximate four and three quarter hours layover between arrival at LHR and departure for Vienna. Two years ago, our flight from Dublin to Berlin was, in effect, a "domestic" flight so far as customs and immigration formalities were concerned, but we are not sure if the same situation applies between England (Great Britain) and Austria.
Can someone please tell me if we will be able to check our bags all the way through from Auckland to Vienna or if we will have to collect them at LHR and clear customs and immigration there? If we have a choice, it may be better for us to do this at LHR to use up a bit of the layover time there and shorten the clearance time at Vienna.

You'll check your bags all the way through from AKL to VIE. You'll be an international transit passenger at LHR. You'll go through airport security before your second flight, but no passport control, no baggage retrieval, no customs. That won't happen until you get to VIE.
UK-Austria is an international flight because UK is not one of the so-called Schengen countries with common immigration and customs.

It isn't, you will have passed through immigration and customs.
The only reason you would pass through immigration and customs at London is if your luggage isn't checked through and hence you'd have to collect & re-check it.
