Art Portfolio on Ryanair?

Hello all,
A friend is flying to Germany for work and absolutely need the portfolio. The problem is that Ryanair allows 55cm x 40 x 20 and the portfolio is 54 x 43 x 5.
Will there be problems? It can't be checked because truly it's irreplaceable and fragile.
The client selected the flights otherwise he would have gone with a different airline.
If he pays a fee will it be allowed as hand luggage?
Oh and the departing airport is Orio Al Serio if that makes a difference
Thanks!

A quick bit of maths suggests it should fit digaonally into the measuring frame, therefore it should be OK. BUT this is Ryanair and I wouldn't want to bet on it

if it's this important, I would get written confirmation from Ryanair that the portfolio can be taken on board.

Nothing we say on here will help one way or the other. Even IF one of us had managed a similar sized/shaped parcel on RyanAir, does not mean the desk agent at BGY will let it on.

I'd try to get it in writing (good luck w/ THAT! ) -- or -- explain to the client that there is a problem and he needs to re-book (but the same issue might pop up on another airline)
