yestravel wondered: Still puzzled as to why CO would have seats on the same airlines and UA not.

Answer: Because United had instituted a de facto policy of utter contempt, at every level, for their customers. In this case, it's the implementation of a system called "Starnet" where United will not let its Mileage Plus members buy award seats that United's partners are willing to sell. That's hardly the only instance of United's corporate contempt for its customers: about 5 years ago, United moved most of its telephone operations offshore, and huge numbers of people have found it incredibly frustrating to deal with United over the phone.

If you have elite status with United, you have a reason, or at least an excuse, to fly with them because you'll get Economy-plus seating. If you don't have elite status with United, there is absolutely no reason to fly with them. If you must fly with them, I'd suggest that you consider joining one of their partner's FF programs (Air Canada or Lufthansa), and park your miles in those programs whenever you fly on United.

That is wonderful, yestravel.

Living in the D.C. area is a reason to use United.

Hopefully, the "starnet blocking" that UA does will go away when the MP and OP programs merge and we will continue to have the award availabiltiy that CO offers now.

Exactly...UA goes from DC to most places we want to go. I was wondering what will happen with the merger re CO's superior availability. sure glad u made me aware of the possibility of taking advantage of it.
