ANA's Boeing 787 shows 2 x 4 x 2 seating on Seatguru
www.seatguru.com/airlines/ANA/ANA_Boeing_787.php
Economy class is showing a seat pitch of 31 inches and a width of 18.5 inches. Rumor is that the U.S. airlines will use 3 x 3 x 3 seating and squeeze another seat in the squeezeliner.

I had a side-aisle seat and took a photo of the four center seats:

You can see that there are a couple of inches between the two middle seats in the center and they each have their own armrest. All 8 seats in the row are like that: one armrest of their own and one to share.
With the 3x3x3 config that I think CO will have, the three middle seats will have to share both armrests. Or the three middles have two (if they don't share) and the six window and aisle seats only have one).

>>NH's domestic config is 3-3-3.<<
Do you mean "will be 3-3-3"?
It wasn't that way in Nov. and it isnt that way, according to the seat map at fly-ana, for 12/31 OKJ-HND. Or do they have two 787s now?

Wonderful (wunrfl?) photos, mrwunrfl!
The 2-4-2 layout looks really nice. I wouldn't want to be on the 3-3-3 configuration for very long.
Wikipedia has a chart on various wide-body seating configurations:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide-body_aircraft
The 787 in 3-3-3 config is tight, but not the tightest out there. Air Transat flies the A330 in a 3-3-3 configuration. I endured this once (OK, twice, given the roundtrip) and swore never to do it again.

A long flight in Japan would be 900 miles, e.g. CTS-FUK or CTS-KOJ. CTS-OKA would be less than 2000 miles.
From Tokyo Haneda: HND-CTS (Sapporo) = 509 miles, HND to Kyushu under 600 miles. HND-OKinawA less than 1000 miles.
So, I would not mind, much, 3x3x3 in Japan. Most Japanese don't my shoulders so a middle seat would probably be ok on a domestic Japan flight.
All of those flights would be shorter than LAX-IAD (2288 miles) and other than CTS-OKA they would all be shorter than EWR-HOU.
Still, the 787 will be better than economy in a UA 757.
