Alaska vs. Mexicana vs. Aeromexico
For an upcoming trip in December, we can fly to Mexico using any of these carriers (for relatively the same price)
I've never been a fan of Alaska (dated planes, dated cabin, ok service) but they do have the direct flight. Never flown on either Aeromexico or Mexicana. Which would you pick (if flight time and price were not an issue) |
I've heard you might get a free beer with the Mexican airlines. If that doesn't matter, go with price, miles, and best time and connections.
|
I'd choose the nonstop if all things are equal. Depending on which route, you might have to connect in Mexico City with either Mexicana or Aeromexico. I've flown Aeromexico not Mexicana, and the flight was fine, though my luggage was looted on the return and several items stolen. This I attribute more on the airport workers than the airline itself, though you never know.
But I'd always make my decision based on the ease of travel and the price. I am willing to pay a bit more to get a nonstop flight or a flight at a more convenient time. |
For us, and we are also going to Mexico in December, and had those choices, it comes down to two things - non-stop flights and the fact that we can get AA FF miles by flying with Alaska. So Alaska it is.

I just got bcak from Mexico City and flew Aeromexico. I was quite happy with their service. I chose them because they had the best price, were non-stop and for the miles.

Thanks, Femi, guys...we ended up going with Alaska (for the Continental miles only)--the nonstop factor helps as well.
Oh well, guess we need to bring some entertainment to keep us preoccupied. :) |
I'm too late to this party but I like either Mexicana or Aeromexico over Alaska. Personally I've had better on-time results. Plus they are more like an "old fashioned" airlines. Attentive well-dressed cabin attendants, free drinks, free box lunch, free movie, etc. And recently on my routes (Seattle to Mexico) they were significantly less expensive & offered nonstop flights (with Alaska I always have a transfer).

No matter how cheap an Aeromexico ticket is, it ends up being very expensive.
My lugagge was looted twice flying from Los Angeles to Mexico City. All electronic equipment was stolen as well as half of my personal belongings. The airline is well aware of this problem that it seems to happen on daily bases, but they refuse to aknowledge it or do something to correct it. Next time you think they have cheap tickets, remember the high cost of flying Aeromexico. |
