Airlines to start charging for carry-ons? One already does....

I like the idea because ever since the airlines are charging for checked luggage, some people try to bring ridiculous amounts as 'carry-on' onto the plane with them.

I didn’t say I wouldn’t fly, just that it would be less reason to fly. I’ve never once checked a bag since I first flew near 20 years ago. If I can’t fit it in my carry-on then I don’t bring it. Most airlines I fly are pretty strict about the two carry on rule which is what I stick with, my camera bag and a small suitcase.

There was a follow up story (couldn’t find the link) about some airlines charging you just to speak to a representative.

Frontier airlines allows a free carry on, but ONLY if you have booked directly with them. If you booked through any consolidator or even with Capital One using miles, you will pay $20 (or is it $25 for the first carryon bag) as well as for checked luggage. What's more unless you book directly with them, you can not get a pre assigned seat -- a privilege reserved for those who book with them directly.

Paying for a carry-on would be "less reason to fly" seems a bit of an over-reaction. If they simply raise the ticket price by $25 instead of making a separate charge, would that be "less reason to fly"?

Ick. Sorry but a carryon of some sort is somewhat a required item for practically every trip. Even if you're just going overnight you probably need a backpack or tote bag with a change of clothes, basic toiletries/meds, maybe a camera or laptop, etc. There's a certain point where some things should just be included in even the most basic price.

We Americans either cannot do Maths or we are so culturally used to all-you-can-eat everything, or both. A la carte pricing in travels don't get half as many resistance in other parts of the world as in the US.

Well, personally I think it sucks for them to charge customers to bring clothes on vacation because that is basically what they'd be doing. Either charge for the carry on <b>OR</b> charge for the check in. Not both.

People do push the limit with carry-on there is no question about that and the weight of what they carry-on is dangerous. Originally, overhead bins were meant for a jacket and a man's hat or a woman's handbag. That's it!

If anyone has ever flown through real turbulence and saw all the overhead bins popping open and stuff flying out, you realize just how dangerous carry-on in an overhead bin can be. One of the worst items of course is duty free liquor bottles. Have one of those hit you in the head and it could be serious. A 15lb. 'carry-on' suitcase is no fun to have come flying at you either.

Now imagine if there were no overhed bins. Problem solved, all you do is put your 'carry-on' under the seat in front of you. But you know what the issue will then be don't you. 'But I don't have room for my feet'. Too bad, if the choice is your comfort or my safety, you lose every time.

Airlines KNOW that overhead bins are a serious safety issue. But bow to the pressure of stupid passengers. I wish just ONE would have the guts to remove their overhead bins. It was just ONE that first stopped allowing smoking and risked business going to other carriers.

So instead of moaning about maybe paying for carry-on, take a minute to think about safety.

Instead of arguing, 'should we pay for carry-on' try arguing 'should we do away with carry-on altogether?'

Chavair in Ireland is considering charging for carry on - but I reckon O'Leary is just looking for cheap publicity

Next year it will be passengers paying not to fly with them
