Airfare.com wants $1428; United wants $2044

I usually like to purchase a ticket from the airline directly, but this is quite a difference. Any comments on why there is such a difference?

Can I assume no frequent flyer miles with www.airfare.com?

It looks like airfare.com is finding some lower fare codes. It does happen. It could also be a consolidator fare. Without knowing the the fare codes are it's impossible to give a detailed answer.

Getting miles has nothing to do where you purchase the ticket. Again it's all about fare code. Find out the what the fare code is and you'll have your answer.

I think airfare.com tickets are subject to confirmation, but double-check that. If I am correct, you may not actually get this fare, and you won't find out whether you do or not for 48 hours.

I suggest posting your itinerary here and see if anyone can help you do better.

Have you tried checking fares on http://matrix.itasoftware.com/cvg/dispatch/ ? It is not a site where you can complete ticket purchase but if you find something you like you can get all the booking details and use that to book through a travel agent or with the airline over the phone.

Thanks for your comments. Every time I tried to book it with www.airfare.com, the message unavailable at this time came up.

That means the fare code is loaded into GDS but the airline is not making it available.

Could it be sold out? For example, a fare that was valid for purchase thru Jan 31, 2008. Right now is at the end of the time window, but the tix at that fare sold out some time ago.

I'd find it hard to believe that a $1428 economy ticket on United, to/from the USA, would not earn miles. Maybe that would be cheap for EZE-BKK. But it doesn't look like airfare.com tells you what the booking class is before you buy.
