Am I allowed to carry aerosol hairspray on an airline

You are, but at your own risk -- pump is beter than spray with propellant. If in unpressurized area, it may leak or explode, possibly. However, I'm under the impression that most baggage areas in jets are now pressurized; it was the propeller planes that were more likely not to have protected compartments. Somebody else will have to confirm that.

I had one in my carry-on bag and it did not work in Montreal. I had to leave it behind me. Something to think about it.

I've brought aersol hair spray on dozens of plane flights and never had a problem.

I had a can of hair spray and a spray deodorant confiscated in Mexico City airport upon arrival from Chicago.
