Sometimes Air Tahiti Nui offers good fares with a stopover in Tahiti, but i've seen those fares most often at the end of he year, but they might be worth a look. You are going to have o pay at least $1,200 I'm guessing. Its a little cheaper to fly there than to Australia.

You'll almost always do better through a specialist agent like Trailfinders, web brokers like cheapflights.co.uk or straightforward sites like expedia than by restricting yourself to a small number of airline websites.
Depending where you live, for example, you might find Emirates or KLM offer a much smoother and cheaper journey from your local airport via Amsterdam or Dubai than shlepping to Heathrow or Gatwick for Air NZ. And most major Asian airlines offer one-stop services between London and Auckland
And Doug really ought to know what a pain flying from the UK is if you're using Air Tahiti. Not only does it not fly to the UK: no-one in their right mind would change planes at CDG - even if Air Tahiti offers through ticketing. If it doesn't, you'll have to go through passport control, collect your bags and check in all over again.

My fault. The text of the post didn't mention London, so I glossed over that. No, the recommendation to fly Air Tahiti Nui makes no sense coming from London or anywhere in the UK. And it almost always makes more sense to fly via a hub in Europe or Asia rather than through the U.S., where immigration adds a lot of pain for connecting flights. And that doesn't count the longer travel times when flying east to west.
Sorry for the confusion.
