Be sure you put in business class (purple seated guy.) The red seated guys are only for coach seats.

No, I looked LAX-SYD, JFK-SYD, HNL-SYD and SFO-SYD.

You could also buy 10K or 20K miles from AA (around 2.5c each) and look for first class award seats, either one way or RT. The extra 20K miles to go from business to first on QF is an obscenely good idea.

I saw the purple guys. What's the difference b/t Business and First on Qantas? That would be like an extra $400, right? I'm just happy to be flying business (I hope) so I don't know if I want to/can spend the extra money. I never fly biz so this will be a good upgrade.

I can't thank you, AA, justshootme, and Patty enough. I'm calling again tonight. Wish me luck!

OKAY! So here's the update:
I called American and got the GREATEST agent ever. I could tell from the first second that this guy knew his stuff. I explained the story, even saying that I was going to be honest and up front, and he said what the other agent did was fine BUT it would cost 180K miles. I said I didn't have that many and she misinformed me. So, we started over. Turns out that looking at qantas.com / FF section is not that good only because the little red/purple seats are for Australians and Kiwis, and only some of those are allotted to people like myself who having miles with AA (to be used with any OneWorld airline).

Anyway, new best friend Randy the agent got me on hold with a May 4 flight from JFK-LAX-SYD on QF 108 (no plane change which is awesome) and then on the way home on May 27th (only time really available for now) going from SYD-AKL-LAX-NYC. I didn't want to stop more than once but since it's my return home and not trying to get there I'm not so picky. Plus I can use the biz lounges so that's great. All flights except for the return from LAX-JFK are on Qantas, last flight is on American. I will try to see if anything better opens up for the return as I have till Monday to book or lose the seats.

I'm sticking with business class as I don't want to spend more money for miles, and since I usually fly economy business is fine for me.

I loved this guy - my cell phone hung up on our call pretty early and he called not only my cell but my land line trying to reach me within 2 seconds of us being disconnected. Thankfully the land line worked and we continued our conversation. I'm going to write a letter to his supervisor praising how wonderful he was to deal with.

Now I just have to hope that my guy that I swap with can work with these dates...thank you again for all of your wonderful words of wisdom. I learned a lot today!

QF one-oh-late (its nickname - guess why) is a great outcome - a transcontinental flight on a 747 in international business class - doesn't get much better om N. America.

SYD-AKL-LAX-JFK is quite okay too. Congrats!

108 is the same plane all the way through so I can really get comfy. It gets in at 7:25 AM, so if it's late I don't care! The return leaves at 6:15 AM which is going to ruin me! None of this would have happened if you hadn't alerted me to the earlier issue so thank you!!!

You have to get off in LA while they ready the plane for the transpac sector.

No problem! As long as I don't have to make a connection that's fine with me. The agent, Randy, did tell me it was the same flight all the way and said he didn't know if I could get off or not but imagined the crew would maybe want to clean the plane. At least I'll rest knowing I won't miss my LAX connection since it starts at JFK. Gardyloo-how do you know so much? You rock!
