advice needed - 2 of 4 in center section of KLM 747-400 LAX to AMS?

Hi, Unfortuntely we are on 747-400 to AMS which is 3x4x3.
I NEVER book the center section (in this case with 4 seats) but since it's my adult daughter and myself thought that it might make sense to take 2 of the 4 in center section rather than aisle and middle in the side section of 3. That way, at least no stranger climbs over us. If we are on the sides (in a 3-section) then the person in window seat must climb over us. (my daughter needs an aisle for bum leg.) Any thoughts on this?
and the MD11 on the return flight is 3x3x3 - maybe we'll just split up and each have an aisle?
all advise appreciated!
(from the reviews i've read, sounds like KLM may have been a bad choice -- but i liked the idea of going nonstop LAX/AMS)

I think you have a sensible idea in getting aisle + another seat in the center section, but I'd make 1 small revision: on the 747, instead of reserving the seat immediately next to the aisle seat, take the aisle seat and then the seat that's adjacent to the other aisle seat in the center. (That is, if the center section seats are D through G, reserve D and F.)

Unless the plane is completely full, there's a good chance that E will be empty, and you'll have extra room to spread out. If the plane is full, it's almost certain that the person in E would be willing to switch with whichever of you is in F.

I try to stay away from the windows on long hauls. It's quieter in the center.

Can you spring for economy comfort. it looks like it's a 3x2 and more leg room.

Check out seeatguru. It will also show 'bad' and 'good' rows to be in.

Get the 2x2 seats in the rear if you can, despite what seatguru says. The half-width cabin up front is comfortable. May be worth the extra cost.

rkkwan - Seatguru rates the rear window seats not good.

My guess is that seats are narrower in the back.

I once spent 14 hours on a plane very near the toilets. I swore I'd neve do it again.

When rkkwan says one thing and seatguru says something different, I'll take the former's advice, any day.

Read the comment. Only downside is not able to lean against wall to sleep! I'll take that over other seats for sure. Seats are not narrower there. They should be labelled green instead, except for last row.

our plan is to try to get those 2-seaters (except last row) when they open seat selection, as long as it's not a fortune extra. They now charge something around $50 for these seats, still cheaper than the $199 to get "economy comfort."
I had seen those seats on seatguru and so nice to get validation that those would be good choice, even if in back.
KLM couldn't tell me exact price - so i will see. If they are taken -- or too expensive for ten hour flight -- then we'll go with the 2 side of 4 seats in center section.
thanks so much for all the input!
