According to the article:

American said it is "not in favor" of putting anti-missile systems on commercial planes but agreed to take part in the tests to understand technologies that might be available in the future.

and

Fort Worth-based American, a unit of AMR Corp., has said anti-missile defense is best handled by stopping terrorists from getting missiles that could shoot down commercial jets and by improving security around airports.,

but that didn't stop AA from accepting some hard cash to run these tests. Why? Probably so they can keep some of their oldest planes in the fleet, 767-200s flying for couple of more years. IMHO, it's a pretty smart move on the AA management's part.

OTOH, the average John and Jane have to realize that this is just a waste of money. Don't buy into it. Pressure your representatives, senators to apply the money to worthwhile security projects. Starting with changing the minds and hearts of the potential terrorists to having an effective physical security at airports and seaports. None of this smoke and mirror show....
