AA joining all the other legacy airlines in mileage validity

AA just announced that just like all the other legacies (I believe the only exception now is NWA), will cancel your miles after 18 months of inactivity.

I don't think it's a big deal. ANY activity (CC, flowers, restaurants, hotels, charity, purchasing of miles, etc...) will keep the account active for another 18 months.

CO does not currently enforce its expiration rule.

They will also let you go back up to 18 months after your miles expire and find any activity that would have qualified and if you can they will reinstate your miles. I know as my DW's miles expired and we dug up an old car rental that we did in Hawaii and applied it to her account and presto all the miles were back! No big hassle but the real secret is to do some little thing to cause activity.

Just to clarify, DL's current policy is that any activity extends your expiration to the end of the second year, i.e. any activity in 2007 will extend your expiration to Dec 31, 2009 (so you get anywhere from another 24 to 35 months).

Official CO policy is that they can close an account after 18 months of inactivity.

If no mileage is deposited in your account for 18 consecutive months, your membership may be cancelled, and your miles may be forfeited.

This has been in the Onepass rules for many many years, probably since when Eastern was around. However, one, they have not and do not enforce it; two, the wording doesn't say miles just expire - they actually have to close your account. And again, such things do not happen.

Yup, I still have an active CO account with 80 miles in it. I can't recall when my last activity was and the phone number in my profile is so old I don't even recognize which house it was

I'm assuming an Aadvantage Citibank CC will also keep the miles going, right?

Carrybean - Sure. Even if you don't use it for purchase, your annual fees should still earn you miles once a year.

Thanks, Rkk. That card gets used constantly so I don't need to worry.

I can testify to the fact that CO doesn't enforce the 18 month policy. I flew CO in August 2004 and didn't earn any points again until March 2007 when I switched my membership from AA to CO. But thanks for the heads up about AA because I have some points left.

I think I'm safe - my Citibank AA card gets used it seems like very 18hrs, so I don't think I'll worry about the 18mo rule. Good to know though. Thanks
