New "gold" member. Is it possible to call AA and reserve bulkhead or exit row seats? Thanks

Yes. You can also make seating changes online at aa.com

But you should know that there are 10 gazillion AA platinum members out there, so gold isn't worth much for things like upgrades these days as you're always in line behind them. It is definitely a plus for free checked bags though.

I never found that gold did much except put me in a higher zone for boarding - not really that important.

I agree with the 10 gazillion platinum member comment insofar as gold rarely gives us an update anymore. BUT, it does give us check in at the biz counter, higher boarding zone and now, no charge for bags. I will take this gladly, because frankly, these days, every little bit helps. And I only get this perk if I travel with my husband, who is the gold member, so I guess I am doubly grateful for small things.

Thanks for the comments -- I wasn't looking for an upgrade but was happy to get an exit row seat for my tall husband which had previously been blocked for selection.
