AA Domestic Upgrades

Ok I finally have an opportunity to use my AA domestic upgrades. I'm flying to San Francisco. Someone else is paying (always good). I can find the reservation on aa.com by the record locator, so that's great.

How do I request the upgrades? Do I do check the box "request upgrade" under "upgrade reservation"? If I do that, does it know that I want to use the elite upgrades I've accumulated? (I don't want to pay.)

I assume I should request the upgrades asap (so now) instead of waiting?

Thanks!

Ok, I submitted the upgrade requests electronically. It seems like this is the right thing to do, but if not, please let me know! It seems like everyone has an upgrade account, and they will know to deduct from that account (if you pay for upgrades they get deposited there first).

Thanks.

I assume you have enough upgrade stickers for the upgrade?

Yes, you just check the box and then wait to see if it clears.

I think I've over 30, and it's 12 for the r/t. Hopefully I'll get it!

I noticed that AA is running a double elite miles bonus right now, so that's nice.

Only good for tickets purchased on or after March 18.

Do you have elite status and/or is the ticket in a high fare category? Because of the double EQM situation there's a high likelihood that many elites will be trying to upgrade too, so any edge you have will be needed.

Yeah, they bought the ticket after March 18.

Fare classes are Q (outbound) and S (return). Not sure what they mean exactly though. It's JFK-SFO.

I've Gold status.

If you've any tricks for increasing the likelihood of upgrade, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Not really; you're pretty low on the upgrade totem pole. However I can see upgrade inventory on flights for the next several days, so don't give up hope. When are you traveling?

I think you'll understand if I don't give out my dates since I've a few threads and people can piece things together if they have too much time on their hands.

Let's say it's soon and I'll take my chances. Thanks for your help!

By the way, do you know if all fare classes are eligible for that promotion? I guess as long as it's an AA ticket, it's fine?

I think Gardyloo grossly overestimates your ranking on the totem pole and therefore your chances of getting an upgrade on this route.

I've flown JFK-SFO 3-4x/yr for years as both AA gold & plat and never gotten an upgrade. As Plat I've gotten close a few times, as high as "next" on the list. As gold I've never gotten on into the top 5 who missed out.

There seem to be way to many Exec Plat passengers on this route who are always ahead of me.

If you get an upgrade then that's fantastic. It's a long flight and the AA 767 business class is far better than coach.

Check in time is one of the criteria for the order of upgrades, so the one thing you CAN do is check in online 24hrs ahead. It's definitely not the most important criteria, but it is under your control.

Thanks. I'll be sure to check in online. I hope the economy has slowed things down!

I was looking at A bucket inventory on various flights leaving between today and next Weds. Many flights showed F7 A7. If AA is clearing EXP and Plat U/G requests at the permitted early windows (100 hrs for EXP, 72 for Plat, 24 for Gold) - which they may not be - there was still space for Golds on several flights.

If they're clearing EXPs and Plats closer to flight time, then nobody can say. Like I said, I wouldn't give up hope.

Regardless, the OP should pick an exit row seat if possible (and if there are exit row seats still available, that's a good omen) so in the worst case it won't be six hours of crunch coach.

What are the best seats, actually? I checked seatguru last night, and it looks like they are around row 20 for 767-200? But I couldn't choose them online on my flights.

Seatguru didn't have any recommended seats (nothing marked green) to my surprise.

On AA 767-200 I like 26-30 C&G, aisle seats in the middle section. I don't actually like the rows 20-24 side window/aisle, even the exit row due to the traffic near the galley/lav area.

On AA 767-300 (also used on JFK-SFO route) I like rows 10-12, again C or G. The mini middle cabin is nicer than the back of the bus, and overhead luggage space is greater since it's the same as the renovated business class space.

I actually picked something in the low 20s, and I did think about the issue with the lavatory.

But I've changed my seat for the outbound.

Why do you prefer the middle section and not the seats on the sides?

Usually my thinking is that I prefer as close to the front as possible so I can get out as quickly as possible.

I prefer the middle for 2 reasons.

If I take a side aisle there is always somebody in the window seat next to me. Window seats are never empty. The middle seat, however, isn't always occupied.

On the side aisle the window passenger has no way to get out except through, around, or over me. If I'm sleeping in the center section the middle passenger can at least step out through the other side.

These aren't major points - simply my own preference after taking the same flights many times.

That's good reasoning. I'll let it sit and think about whether I want to change again.

I like having a movable arm rest, that's for sure, and AA's website does mark these seats now.

I've been upgraded on the outbound. Yippee!

The seats in Business class are 2 by 2 by 2.

They have put me in the middle two. Do you think window in the last 2 is better.

The first row is row 7. Are there any known issues with this row?

Thanks!

IIRC the bulkhead row has less legroom, and of course you can't put anything on the floor for T/O or landing. Seatguru says the last row window doesn't have a window, but the second-to-last would. But any biz class seat is better than any coach seat on the 76s.

Thanks. I'm thinking of switching to a window seat, but I can't. It shows as available on the seat map, but I can't select it. Is it because I've already checked in or because it's an upgrade?
