7/26 rkkwan going away Dim Sum GTG Houston
I know there are a few Airlines regular in Texas, so the crosspost...
Hey guys, I am leaving Houston soon for a position at UCLA. I know some of you in the area are quite fond of having dim sum, but my schedule is very tight. So, I'm deciding date, time and place all by myself.
Date: Saturday, July 26th
Time: 11am
Location:
Ocean Palace Restaurant
11215 Bellaire Blvd #D
Houston, TX 77072
They have a website now: www.oceanpalacerest.com
Totally casual, very cheap. Last time, I think we spend about $12 each for lunch, all-in. Just let me know how many of you are coming before that day, so I can get table of the right size upon arrival.
Post on this thread, or email me at "rkkwan at earthlink dot net"
See you there.

WT - I don't know what to do with flying yet. For my upcoming LAX-HKG, I'm flying the cheapest fare - which happens to be NW (via NRT).
For LA - Houston, non-stop choices are only WN and CO. Fares on CO on this route is competitive with WN, so no reason for me to not fly CO at this time.
I'd love to fly CX's non-stop LAX-HKG. But neither fares (either CX or AA tickets) are cheap. And cheap CX fares earn zero miles. And no oneworld airlines have LA-Houston non-stop.

rkkwan - FWIW, a friend of mine just got back 2 weeks ago on CX from HKG - LAX and had very little good to say about it, from seats, to service, to food, etc. Her parents were born in China, so they go fairly often. Said it was truly bad flight.
She raved about flight over on Air China from LAX - PEK.

Don - Since I almost always fly coach, I haven't seen anything in CX that makes me feel they're special. But they are the only one that flies LAX-HKG non-stop, and has 3x daily.
But with the fares they're charging, I think I'll just fly whoever's cheapest. And that probably will give me a chance to try various airlines like JL, NH, CI, BR, KE, OZ...
Anyways, it may just you and I having dim sum, if you don't mind.

Ray - I sorta thought that flight was probably an abberation since CX has a very good reputation and of course no airline is immune from having bad hair days. My folks had a good experience on them and their schedule is hard to beat.
And, a party only needs 2 people!!

rkkwan,
Indeed, welcome to California.
IMO the best Dim Sum in SF is at Yank Sing, closely followed by Tong Kiang (not the cheapest, just the best).
If you are ever in the Bay Area, do try them
Good luck in your new position.

Tong Kiang is excellent, but we also like the nearby Mayflower. For old-time atmosphere you can't beat Gold Mountain. Few people know about the Hang Ah tea room, the first in SF to offer dim sum. It was a great favorite of Herb Caen back in the day.

When you go to the Hang Ah (it's on Hang Ah alley, next to a concrete playground) be sure to order the gold coin buns: a thick slice of cha siu sitting inside a bun that looks like a potsticker in shape. Yum!!!
