$12 transatlantic fares??

Any thoughts?

I think it's great if that's what it would really cost, but throw in extra charges for food, entertainment, baggage and taxes and you could probably get the same ticket on a major carrier earning flyer miles and flying out of a larger, well connected hub.

There's a huge difference between "fares starting at $12", and "all fares at $12". Try book a last minute flight on some Ryanair routes and check the prices.

I paid over $200 for a one-way fare from London to Palermo last December. That's a 2.5 hour flight on a 737, which is a lot cheaper to operate than a Trans-Atlantic.

They can definitely get some business, but over the many decades there have been quite a few startup international low-cost airlines around the world. Somehow, none survives for long in its original model.

Maybe this new venture will be different, and more power to them. I think that will get more people to travel internationally, and won't hurt the established airlines much, if at all.

We already have no-frill international airlines. They're called, American, United, Northwest, Delta, Continental and U.S. Airways in economy.

Given Michael O'Leary's "problems" with rules I would suggest that one of the airports they use is Bangor as that's probably going to be the place where most Ryanair flights will end up.

Unless of course the pilot says to the F-16 pilot that the flight must go to Providence to keep on schedule
