Wildebeest baby boom just started!

Just south of Ndutu (in the direction of Kusini) the babies are being born in large numbers. Jackals are having a festival cleaning up the placentas!

Thanks Eben. We expect LOTS of photos when you return.

Predator Biologist-If you see this, when is your trip? Aren't you headed in that direction soon?

Thanks Eben!

Yes Dana, I fly out 2 weeks from today!! However, we go to see the chimps in Mahale first so I'm about 3 weeks from arriving in the Ndutu area. Almost all the calves should be born in the next 3 weeks so we may catch just the tail end of the birthing -- regardless there should be babies everywhere and the grocery store will be open 24 hours a day.

Bill-I bet you can't wait. You will be there this year probably a week or two earlier than what I'm planning for next year. I decided that the birthing and migration are so unpredictable that I'd rather go a little later and at least catch all the calves if not the births. I don't want to risk being too early. I look forward to hearing about Mahale when you get back.

Barryozed-sounds like you are going to be in the right place at the right time. Have a fantastic trip!

Dana: extremely excited and already in rush mode to get everything done before I leave.

Early March should be a great time to go as well! I will post everything about Mahale and the Serengeti on my return.

Looking forward to it. Lived is South Africa for 10 years and toured all around on safari, but first time in the serengeti and first time my fiance will be in Africa...I think it will make a great engagement present. Thanks for the advise

Wow...those babies must have been born the day I left Ndutu. Was there for two nights - left on the 24th - and didn't see any baby wildees.

We were in the Ndutu area last week when our guide(Charles) spotted a wildebeest about to give birth. One of the most fantastic things I have ever seen. It all happened in seconds and the mom and the new born were galloping off.

Thanks David. You were right in the middle of all of the action. Can't wait for your trip report. Am I right that this was the trip you planned at the last minute so you could go gorilla tracking in Rwanda? If I recall correctly, you have just returned, so thanks for posting photos so quickly.
