Where to stay near market (Medina?) in Marrakech, Morocco
Hey guys,
I know this question's probably been asked x/1k, but where should we stay near the market? (the Medina?) We'd like something romantic and exotic and "Moroccan" if there is such a thing. Don't want a western-style hotel. I've read a lot about Noir d'Ivoire (a riad) but it looks so small and it's kinda pricey. I like the looks of Jardins du Koutoubia (larger hotel but it still looks very "Moroccan") and it looks like it's steps away from the Medina. It's not that highly-rated but that doesn't always mean anything. Any opinions? Also: riad vs. hotel? Any OTHER hotels I should be looking at?
Thanks
Hal

Would definitely stay in a riad style hotel rather than a regular hotel for many reasons. The medina in Marrakech is packed with riads style hotels with different budgests etc..
It all depends on you.

You get what you pay for, Travelin - good and bad. For $10 a day it may not be so great. For $300 a day, it probably will be. But your impulse to stay right in the thick of things is totally correct. I've been in Marrakech multiple times over the years. Djamma El Fnar is the centre of the world - one of the great travel experiences.

I normally stay at Hotel Ali which is on the SW corner of Djemaa el Fna, see http://www.hotel-ali.com It's popular with trekkers and travellers and a good place to meet people. It costs 250dh b&b for a single ensuite, 350dh for a twin. A few of the single rooms are a bit cramped so it's worthwhile viewing them first.
However... the restaurant area is currently undergoing some renovation but this should be finished by Easter, inshallal.
Other popular hotels of a similar ilk are the CTM and the Shehrazad

Tim -- where have you been all my life! Great info -- would greatly appreciate any more that you might have to say here or in other threads.
Dogster -- you are the first one to say nice things about M. Got a trip report or even a few suggestions?
I've decided to up my budget a bit... over the next 20 years of my life, what difference will $50 a night make (lots of mac and cheese when I get home tho)
So something between the Ali and the Christina lol.
Back to that weird thing called "work"

I stayed in Riad Sekkat in the medina last year. It was absolutely wonderful and can highly recommend it. I wrote about my experiences on my blog: http://femmesfrancophiles.blogspot.c...ad-sekkat.html

It's only depends on You, to be cheap/expensive, you get what you want.
There is a plenty of excellent accommodations in Marrakech, to avoid touts do some research and read some reviews after that contact the reviewers for advices on negative and positive sides, no one is perfect to all good.
if we come and listening to everyone's suggestiong, it will take us long and will be confused to pick the right one, and who you can trust and whom you can't.
Not easy to take someone's advice, but it's easy to pick it for yourself, after you do the research use the guidebook as well, it'll be sure helpful.
