Wankie Game Reserve
In 1967 I visited Wankie Game Reserve somewhere south of Victoria Falls and near a town called Dett. I can't find either of these on an internet search. Does anyone know if Wankie Game Reserve now has a different name? I stayed at the Gwai River Hotel, from which I was driven into the game reserve.

This mention of Wankie brought back many happy memories of the times that I visited in the late 60's or early 70's. (I'd have to dig up an old passport to be sure of the years.)
As I recall, there were two occasions. The first was when I stayed with the mother of a varsity girlfriend. (Actually an ex-girlfriend to be totally accurate, but that's a long story!) Her mother was a District Nurse in Matopos at the time, and her daughter and I travelled up to Vic Falls then back down through the Park.
The second time was when I came out of an informal varsity field hockey tour of Rhodesia. That mother had moved to Wankie, and a mate and I borrowed her Landrover to again go to Vic Falls and back down through Wankie.
A good friend of my ex's mother was at Matopos when I first met him, and then Chief Warden of Wankie at the time of my 2nd visit. An American named Boyd Rees I think. I've always been curious as to how he came to be in Rhodesia, and when he arrived, I never got to ask him.
A real bonus for us, and some of the best memories, was being taken into Wankie by the Warden, before the gates opened in the morning. And the very few people and vehicles, even at other times. In a way it spoiled me for any oter public park such as Kruger, bearing in mind that I don't have the lifestyle that allows the exclusive kind of safari that is commonly reported in this forum!
