trip to capetown south africa
I am planning a trip to Cape Town, South Africa from New York City. It will be my first time there. I will be spending about 12days there and I need somethings to do. Any suggestions?

Are you planning on spending all 12 days on the Cape? If you have 12 days total, perhaps think about spending half of it in eastern South Africa, at either Sabi Sand or Kruger or a combination of both. As for the Cape, depending on your interests, check out:
Table Mountain (you can hike it if you are so inclined)
Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope
Robben Island
Stellenbosch Botanic Gardens
Company Gardens
District Six Museum
Bo Kaap
Winelands (Constantia is close to town; Franschhoek is worth spending a night or two)
Clifton Beach
Boulders Beach
Craig's report is a good read. You can also check out mind although it's long (just click on my user name for it).

when we were going to SA a few years ago, I came across a book called "14 days in Cape Town"; it was amazing what they found to do there. I've searched for it, but can't find any reference to it any more.
We only had 3 whole days there and wished we'd had twice that.

When are you going and what are your interests?
I spent 6 days in Capetown and 4 days north of Capetown during the wildflower season (late August). I ran out of time rather than things to do.
Tripplanners list are all must dos. Also Kirstenboch Gardens, Castle of Good Hope, V&A waterfront area, Township tours.
Having a car allows for numerous day trips with a flexible itinerary. This is good for the Cape region - plenty of spots to check out the views, beaches, shops, walks etc.
I'd also recommend Hermanus, particularly in whale watching season.
The winelands could also take several days,
If you are a hiker there are plenty of options - I chose the route up Table Mountain from Kirstenbosch gardens which took 5 hours and was my personal highlight of Cape Town.
