Travel overland - Kenya to Rwanda

Has anyone any thoughts or experience on travelling overland from Nairobi to Kigali by any available transport.
I can get flights for the short trip if necessary, but am interested in other [safe] methods of transport.

This is the sort of question that lonely planet guides and their online thorntree excel at answering. I don't have any idea. Try: http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/ca...es.cfm?catid=9

Just go to a bookstore where they have Lonely planet travel guides and check the appropriate sections on how to get to various places. They are quite good on these things. Backpackers do this all over the world on buses or trains where available are the way to go for long distances. They then use matatus for short distances. Have done it myself, and traveling with the locals has been safe, very interesting, and needless to say-different. You just need to keep a closer eye on your belongings.

Good advice so far if you want to travel slowly - which has to be the way to go.

There used to be a train from NBI to Kampala - no idea if there still is. And then, once in Uganda, wherever you want to go there will be a minibus (a matatu) to take you there. Crossing the border Uganda to Rwanda I have never done - my experience is from Burundi and it was a long time ago.

But check out LP - and have the most amazing time.

To sunny days and luangwablondes - you obviously 'travel' only by book and imagination .Noted that you could not mention one single placename ???? The real thing requires a bit more than a skip thro' lonely planet guides etc . At least

"spoofer" - that's real mature.

"you obviously 'travel' only by book and imagination"

What do you know about me? I have travelled extensively and am currently planning a trip to East Africa. No, I havn't done the overland route you reference - and I mentioned that in my response.

I saw your post had gone a day without response so I suggested other ways to get information. This forum does not cater to independent overland travel and so you got predictibly few responses.

Instead of a polite thank you I get an insult? I think that reflects more on you than me.

You gave very little to go on, and very little info on what you are really looking for, what do you expect? A mind reader? If you want someone to hold your hand on this trip, talk to your travel agent in the future.
That info on guide books often is just a start in researching alternatives to what you want. And philr, you a just a novice traveler to post that request for info.We were trying to help. Be specific next time.
