To tangier or not?

Hi

I am traveling to Morocco in late May with 7 of my friends. We are planning our itinerary and are torn to whether or not do Tangier. We've read many forums that advised to skip Tangier altogether. We do however want to go to Chefchouen and Marrakesh. We would have 6 days, and planning to do at least 3 in Marrakesh.

Any recommendations are welcomed.

Thanks!

Tangier is terrific and very historic. Where are you coming from and where are you landing in Morocco ? That would determine whether you go thru Tangier. Don't forget to visit Fes which is more interesting than both Chaouen and Marrakech.

I, too, had questions about visiting Tangier, but I did and that was an excellent experience. I stayed in a riad in the medina where I saw daily life. You can learn more by looking up my trip report, which includes, as well, my visit to Chefchouen, and other cities. I don't know the details of your itinerary, but, if not greatly inconvenient, I would include Tangier. ZZ

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. As we are still finalizing our itinerary, we might include it.

If we're doing Tangier, we'd definitely fly into Tangier, and leave from Marrakech. I don't think we'll be able to do Fes, as we have limited days. The following are our itinerary options. Great if we can get some thoughts on it.

ITINERARY A: optional day trips
Day 1: ½ day Marrakesh
Day 2: Marrakesh (optional day trip to Essaouria/High Atlas~3hrs each)
Day 3: Marrakesh
Day 4: Marrakesh
Day 5: Day trip to Agafay Desert and overnight GLAMPING
Day 6: Travel Day

ITINERARY B: over night train + optional day trips
Day 1: ½ day Tangier
Day 2: Tangier (optional day trip to Chefchaouen – 1.5hrs)
Overnight train, departs at 9pm and arrives at 8am
Day 3: Marrakesh
Day 4: Marrakesh (optional day trip to Essaouria/Agafay Desert/High Atlas)
Day 5: Marrakesh or day trip to Agafay Desert and overnight GLAMPING
Day 6: Travel Day

ITINERARY C: two buses (3-4hrs each) + optional day trip
Day 1: ½ day Fes
Day 2: Fes
Bus (3hrs)
Day 3: Casablanca or Rabat
Train (4hrs)
Day 4: Marrakesh (optional day trip to Agafay Deser (1hr)/Essaouria/High Atlas – 3hrs)
Day 5: Marrakesh
Day 6: Travel Day

Thanks again.

Day 4: Marrakesh
Day 5: Marrakesh or day trip to Agafay Desert and overnight GLAMPING
Day 6: Travel Day

Sounds like you can fly into anywhere in Maroc. Think I'd prefer intinerary C and on day 3 go to Rabat not Casa.

Thanks all! I think we'll be going with itinerary D for now. Really appreciate the suggestions.

Just so you are aware, the Agafay area which is about 20km south west from Marrakech is not a desert. In the heat of the summer it vaguely resembles the semi-arid area around Ouarzazate but in May there will be lots of greenery.

So long as it's a clear night with no moon you would get to see loads of stars, but these glamping places are extraordinarily expensive for what they are.
