Sunscreen & mosquito repellent
Going to SA, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe 15th - 30th October. Confused about how to manage sunscreen AND mosquito repellent without one negating the other. Any suggestions ?

Mosquito biting time is between dusk and dawn (no sun, so no suncreen), the time to use repellent. If, however, you are a natural attraction for flying things and want to use repellent during day, I would suggest you wear mid-elbow or long sleeves and use repellent on exposed arms, hands and ankles (if not wearing socks) and back of neck. I'd never use repellent on my face - use suncreen here.
As others have mentioned when out on the Delta (mokoros), suggest you have one of those "no-see-um" nets to cover hat and face to avoid knats and other flying things into your face and mouth. You can find these at REI (believe their website is www.rei.com) - cost about $10-$15.

I guess I never knew that ! Anyway I am a bug magnet so will still need to take precautions also during the day.
Also when I went to get my jabs the nurse recommended spraying mosquito repellent on clothign in advance of the trip. Have you done this or do you simply rely on topical application ?
I have already ordered my no-see-um head net (Modern Outpost based in Canada - US$3.99 plus shipping).

Surprisingly, and maybe thankfully, bugs don't like me. I use repellent, if, and when I remember, on exposed skin, but that's about it. Don't forget to wash this off before going to bed.
About spraying clothing with Permethin (sp) or clothing that is already treated with this, which can be washed without loosing the effectiveness - I never bothered. As far as I'm concerned this stuff is still toxic and I'd just prefer not to have it near my bod, or be taking whiffs of it up my nose (whether it smells or not). I'll stick with the original "spray in bottle" (or Avon's Skin-so-soft which actually works for me) and be a happy camper.
To spray or not to spray? You have to use/do what is best suited for your particular situation.
