Seeking Safari for a single traveler
I am beginning my search for a safari for a single traveler. I am a woman in her early 40s and would like some advice from others who have done this. Best group to travel with, best area to travel, etc. I am not married to the idea of going to South Africa and am open to any suggestions.

I am not sure where home is for you, but for care and attention for the single traveller throughout Southern (and East) Africa, not just South Africa, you will receive superb personalised service from Caroline Bayly of Classic Escapes, South Africa, not to be confused with a company of a similar name in the US. You can contact her and her team on email: [email protected]/www.classic-escapes.co.za

worrelybird- I am always looking for single travel experiences as well- I recently noticed that Overseas Adventure Travel - commonly known as OATS- seems to have single travel opportunities. I have never gone on one of their trips but friends who have, come back with good reviews.
They do have African Safari trips
Good luck

Ever think of just going on your own without a group? It's very do-able. For example, you can plan something like South Africa and do a couple different camps - most include the tours in the cost so unless you book a private vehicle, you'd be on game drives with others anyway. Not sure what your experiences are with traveling solo - it's not for everyone. I personally prefer it to group travel. I'm planning a Namibia self drive for mid-end August of 2015. If anyone is interested in coming with me, please let me know and I'll send you the itinerary and estimated costs. I'm totally planning to go solo unless a travel partner pops up and I'm actually excited about it (believe it or not!).

I was away on a safari--alone--when you posted your question. For me the only downside to solo is the cost.
Since you are very open to any kind of safari, why don't you list the types of animals or activities you are interested in, plus # of days available, and budget. Then more specific answers can be provided.
You probably cannot beat the total pricing package of OAT, air and ground. The OAT travelers always seem to be having a nice time when I run into them.
Maybe you have found your trip by going with Carrie. I have seen her itinerary and it is fabulous!

I also only travel on my own and love it! The single supplement is a drag and I do try to avoid it whenever possible. And if not possible then so be it!
Prefer to make my own itinerary and have found in May or June you can be lucky enough to have the guide/driver & vehicle all to yourself some days.
For my first safari I chose Kenya & Tanzania, flew into camps in Kenya and then had my own guide for a week traveling the Northern Circuit in Tanzania followed by a week in Zanzibar. It was amazing!! Click on my name & you'll see the link to my rather long trip report.
2nd trip was 5 days in Cape Town, 5 days Mashatu Tented Camp in Botswana & 4 days at Main Camp in MalaMala South Africa. Again amazing!
Now this May heading to Namibia for 3 weeks, again itinerary planned by myself & a very good tour operator after a lot of research. Will even be self driving for week and can't wait!
Grab yourself a copy of Fodors The Complete African Safari Planner to get a sense of all that is available and you'll find the sky's the limit!
