I've been twice and used petrabynight.com both times
Mete and greet at the airport , private AC car for the tours (complete with complimentary bottled water and juice)
First time with them I did Petra (via a few hours at the Dead Sea) , Jerash and then over the border into Syria ..Damascus and even onto Lebanon .
For the border crossing to Syria we didn't even have to leave the car our guide went in and did all the formalities ..
Second time was a short break to Petra for my wifes birthday , we came back from Petra by Night to find a huge birthday cake in our room that the guide had arranged for us
can't praise them enough to be honest

YES!!! I just returned from Jordan and had the most amazing experience thanks to my local driver/guide!!! I adored him and he really took such good care of us. His name is BASHAR HERZALLA. you can reach him at [email protected] or call at 009.627.955.427.06.
I'm happy to answer any specific questions you have about him. I am planning to go back to Syria with him as soon as I can get the funds together
As soon as the holidays quiet down I will post a longer trip report. But like i said, i can answer any specifics you have until then. I did 5 days- from Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, and Dead Sea.
Enjoy JOrdan! It was so incredible!

Hey Elizabeth, I am in contact with Bashar and he says he is available for our trip dates in Jordan coming up in February. We are excited. Can I communicate with you directly about this? Regards, Cathy

Because Bashar is a 'driver', is he able to provide any information about the sites and locations? Or does one need a licensed guide for that type of information?
Ideally, I would like to find someone who can do both.
If you prefer, leave a note and I will send private email address.
Thanks!

bgeibert - if you want in depth information then you're better to add a guide at certain sites (which can be arranged via Bashar of Desert Horizon) but Bashar can certainly give a base of information. I haven't heard of any guide/drivers who do both.

We spent 9 days in Jordan in March on a privately guided trip. Our driver was just that- a driver, but who also was able to impart some local history and culture. That being said, at all major sites: Um Qais, Jersh, Petra, etc. we hired a privated guide. They are locally licensed and widely available at the entrance to most tourist sites. The cost was modest and it was well worth it.

I went to Jordan and did not have an absolutely fabulous time. If everyone above says go with Bashar then I would.... I've had some fabulous advice given here for Egypt, although I did not really ask for it for Jordan. I suffered for that then... I wish I had Bashar!
