overnight at Abu Simbel

Do folks recommend an overnight at Abu Simbel? When do the temples close in the evenings?

We are planning a trip for December, and we were wondering if we should fly from Cairo late afternoon, and stay overnight. this would let us see the Light and Sound show, catch the early morning sunrise and depart to Aswan late morning.

thanks for any details that would help us plan this trip.

Just MHO.

Abu Simbel is a great attraction, but not one I would spend more than a few hours.

I'm not a big sound & light show fan - but I LOVED the one at Abu Simbel. I think your idea has some potential.

We've been twice. The first time was the typical - fly up in the morning, see the temple, fly back in the afternoon. Quite a rush.

The second time was as part of a Lake Nasser cruise. We were able to see the temples in the late afternoon (when the crowds were much reduced). Then we went back for the S&L show in the evening. Much more relaxing.

I don't really remember much from Abu Simbel b/c they scheduled me to get up at some ungodly hour (3:30 or 4 am) to fly there.

I'm a late sleeper and I lived in Seattle--which is 10 time zones earlier than Egypt--when I was on vacation there.

So, unless you are an early riser or live onlya few time away, I would not get up early to see it or fly there.

Stay overnight. The S&L show is a good one, and if you like photography, they open the temple very early in the AM for the sunrise pictures.

It's an experience to remember.

my daughter and I just did the overnight. I can't remember the time the temple closed, but we were there for sunrise (lucked out to be Feb 26- near when sun shines directly into the back of the temple), but the light is on the temple in the morning, so sunrise is a great time to be there for photos outside, then you can tour inside of the temples and we returned to seti i (very nice hotel) for breakfast and even had time to walk around the market in the town before the flight at about 10am.

do the overnight, it will be a highlight of your trip.
