No 1 Ladies Detective Agency Film Bought

It was announced that the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency film that was shot by the acclaimed director Anthony Minghella was bought by HBO. The director had said he did not think it was going to make it to the big screen. What is wonderful about HBO buying it, is that they've purchased a large number of episodes. So all the books should be covered.

No word yet as to air dates.

(I haven't been on the board for a long time and am eager to catch up on Patty's and Predator Bio's separate adventures!)

Hi all, I have not been on the board in a long time either. As I am reading the comments about trying to start planning I am remembering how I agonized over every aspect, and how wonderful the trip was.

I can't believe it has been almost a year. I guess it is time to finish the video and pictures and get them posted.

I think it's going to be on TV in the UK over Easter.

I just finished Tears of the Giraffe.

I like the idea of HBO buying it. If the series went to the big screen it would almost certain be dumbed down and ruined.

A small screen HBO release won't have the pressure of needing a big opening weekend. They should be able to concentrate on keeping the stories tiny and quaint the way the books are.

Only problem I have with it being on HBO is that HBO is a separate pay channel on Dish satellite. Which I don't care to pay for. Although, if it is as good as "The Sopranos" (also on HBO) it would be worth it.

tom -

Do as I and friends have, before I had HBO, and there was something on HBO I wanted to view... I'd call for the service and pay the fee, then cancel next day or week when the program was no longer available. Cost was less than the monthly charge.

Of course, at this time we don't know whether No.1 will be shown consecutive days till series complete; more likely it will be weekly, so 13/weeks is 3/months worth of HBO fees.

Only you can decide whether it's worth it. It's sure less than the cost of a few movies in a theatre.

Gothca Sandi, I was thinking of that. Just have to know when the series starts on HBO but typically I find out two weeks too late !!!!!

Hi Sandi, Wayne, Tom, speigel and all,

Wayne, I totally agree with you. This is going to be a quality production with top people. Sandi, it is almost certain to be presented weekly, once the series begins (probably Fall, long after the Easter showing of the pilot). Not clear if HBO will also air the pilot at the same date as BBC One.

And I would guess they will also put it out on DVD for rental or sale at some point if you choose not to sign up for HBO.

Dennis - Thanks for the reminder. My guy at B&N, had mentioned March, but April will do and is right around the corner. I'll be first at the door

Tom - We'll let you know when we see HBO advertising this.

Clem - Sent out emails to all friends whom I got hooked on these have become great fans of Precious and the crew. They were all so excited... like teenagers!

Nice to get good news occasionally!

It is interesting, they are doing 13 episodes but there are 7 (?) books total. Will they stick to the timeline and storyline of the books and add some stories at the end or will they intersperse several stories not in any of the books.

I think the second choice is better.

There are so many stories in each book for each character... just the two guys working the garage is a story in itself... I can certainly imagine following the story lines, as is, in as many episodes as necessary. Maybe they'll have a 2/hr intro, then 1/hr episodes; 1/hr goes pretty fast when you're enjoying something. We'll find out.

On the subject of HBO , I heard today the HBO has an upcoming series about John Adams the second USA President. The reviewer likes the series and I've admired Adams. Maybe it's time to subscribe to HBO?

regards - tom
ps - bringing back "The Sopranos" would cinch it for me but that's not gonna happen, forgetaboutit.

I dropped HBO when they cancelled Deadwood. Guess I'll have to sign up again to see Mma Ramotswe.

Have you seen that the Independent Traveller in the UK is doing tours to Gabs that include a visit to the film set and follow in the footsteps of Mma Ramotswe. Could be fun! My colleague is going in May. http://www.independenttraveller.com/...?newsitemid=15

And now for a sad and bizarre turn, Variety announced that Anthony Minghella suddenly died last night from a brain hemorrhage.
