I am a Canon fan. Have a 5d mark II. I would like to buy or rent a second body.
What do you safari photographers recommend? Leaving in may for Namibia and Zambia. Thanks for your help.

How about the 7D? I just upgraded from the 40D and like what I've seen so far. I haven't taken it on safari yet, but have played around at some parks. Love the Quick Control Screen (with the ability to quickly change AF point selection) and the 8fps Burst Mode. I think it's worth a look. Of course, the lens is the thing. Good luck, Steve

Just kidding. But I agree a second body is great to have on safari. I was very happy I had one a year ago in Tanzania - when one body failed.

"Last years" used digital models tend to become dirt cheap so you might look into a good "old" used one.

I'd recommend getting the 7D. I got one last August, and it's pretty good. It'll also give you that extra reach over the 5D II. I believe the 7D and the 5D II use the same battery type, as well, which means you can share batteries and only take one charger. I shot in Zambia with a 5D and a 1D Mark II, and having two battery types is a pain.

Tom - that is funny. We have too many Canon lenses to make the switch. Nikon has that great 200-400. Not Canon. - Even the rumored lens is waayyyy out of my price range. Regarding the 7D - That is good news that they use the same battery. I'll check that out.

Anyone used the Canon 60D - for video too?

CH - Canon or Nikon lens, the top-line ones starting at $5,000 are not in my budget for me to use only once a year on safari. Not to mention having to lug around such kit through airports!!! And batteries/associated electronic kit? I now have/take three different type batteries, spares, chargers. And more!!!!
