Lemala Ewanjan and Access2Tanzania

Hi -

Has anyone heard anything about and/or stayed at the Lemala Ewanjan camp in the western corridor of the Serengeti? It seems pretty new.

Also, has anyone recently used Access2Tanzania for their safari? I saw some positive reviews from a while ago, but I was wondering if anyone has used them more recently.

As always, thanks!

Ewanjan is actually in the Seronera, not the western Serengeti. If you're looking for a property in the western corridor, you could investigate Mbalageti, Kirawira or Grumeti (permanent tented camps), or one of the seasonal camps that moves to the west with the migration which Ewanjan doesn't. Having said that, the western corridor can easily be visited if you're staying in the central Serengeti, game driving en-route and back. Your choice of where to stay will be determined by what time of year you're going.

Hi Gerie,

As an agent specializing in African safaris, I was looking for a reputable US agent/operator for Tanzania three years ago and found Access2Tanzania. The agent I worked with was knowledgable, thorough and on top of things. I booked my clients and they had a very successful safari. Eerything went like a clockwork, as it is suppose to. A+ and a very high recommendation!! They have excellent people on the ground.

Good luck and enjoy your planning.

Gerie,

I took a safari with Access 2 Tanzania in November 2009. I had a very good experience and found them to be of very high quality (especially my guide Said). Feel free to click on my name and read my prior post to see my (really extensive) writeup.

I had originally found them via lonely planet recommendations and loved the fact that the organizer (Karen) is based in the US. The company is a direct provider though and has an office in Arusha that manages its operations.

Feel free though to email me with any specific questions and I'll do my best to answer.

Ewanjan is one of the newer Lemala camps (Grumeti Expeditions, owner), located in the Central/Seronera area of the Serengeti having just opened for the season as 1st June.

The Lemala Camps (Ngorongoro, Ndutu, No. Serengeti, Ewanjan, Tarangire, Lk. Manyara [the latter as Dec '10]) are relatively new. Ngorongoro was the first, about 2/yrs now and has received excellent reviews. Ndutu came next (last year Dec '09) here between Dec-Mar, and is seasonal thus moves for Aug-Oct to the No. Serengeti area. Tarangire just opened 1st June - Oct, to then move to Lk. Manyara between Dec-Mar.

On recent trip, being at Tarangire, even the rangers didn't know where the camp was located, so along with my guide we went into "recon mode" and did find the place. It's located in the southern area of the park, about 30/minutes north of where Swala Camp is located, a short ride from Kuro airstrip on what was a former "special" campsite, about 1/mile in from the main road.

It's lovely, with 7 tents (2 of which had been moved to Seronera to accommodate the demand in that area for June/July).

Each tent is quite roomy and has either a king or two double beds all with "pleather" head/foot boards (quite interesting and understand a bit of an upgrade from the Ngorongoro furnishings); wood plank floors over the usual canvas found at other seasonal camps; nice furnishings, colors; separate bathroom with loo, bush shower and washbasin... all under the same tent cover/roof. Of course, separate public lounge/dinning tent.

While we didn't visit Ewanjan, if this or the other new Lemala seasonal camps are run/managed as that at Ngorongoro, you won't go wrong.

Can't comment on Access2Tanzania.
