Is the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Safe?

The Consular Information on the US State Department website makes it seem as though even gorilla tracking/safari's aren't safe.

The short answer to your question is "yes." There certainly is unrest in the neighboring areas of the Congo, but there have not been any problems in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park since 1999. There is a heavy military presence in the park and that seems to have prevented any further problems from spilling over from the Congo.

If you are visiting the region, I also suggest a visit to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which has a lot to offer even when its resident gorilla family has gone into Rwanda and become inaccesible. It is about 20-30 miles south of Bwindi.

Do not let the alarmist tone of the U.S. State Department deter you.

I agree with Chris on both Bwindi and Mgahinga, and the facts he cites are consistent with what I know.

Go and enjoy!
