Home alive(charged by rhino!)

We are home! Our trip to Botswana/Zimbabwe/S.Africa was nothing short of amazing. I'm still recovering but our most exciting story was the rhino charge. Long story and I'm sure we will be telling it for years at every cocktail party we attend.(short version, we were on foot in Zambia, charged by a female white rhino, if there was not a tree nearby I would not be here...) Give me a few days to re-coup, sort the THOUSANDS of photos we took and I'll tell you all about it. Thanks again for all your help/advice.

Can't wait. Would love for you to get togegther with Ruth and listen to you you tell of your rhino and Ruth relives being dumped into the water by a hippo.

But, a little confused. You said your trip was to Bostswana, Zimbabwe, S. Africa, but you mentioned the rhino charge was in Zambia. Clarification, please

Welcome back!! A rhino charge sounds more exciting/scary than the warthog charge we experienced. More exotic, too!!

Welcome home! Can't wait to hear the details. Your tale along with recent tales of night-time lion encounters on foot, a baboon attack and retreat into the tent, and a canoe overturned by a hippo are all quite harrowing. There was also the very sad incident of a honeymooner being killed by an elephant in Kenya.

Now I see there was a warthog charge as well.

Momofmany, please sort through the photos and collect your thoughts and recount your adventures when ready.

Momofmany, did you do the rhino walk tour in the MOSI-O-TUNYA national park? I will be in Zambia in a few weeks so I was thinking about doing it.

Steeliejim, we stayed at the Victoria Falls hotel in Zim but did the rhino walk on the Zambia side. Wittsdd, yes, we did the rhino walk in the Mosi-oa-tunya park. This particular part of our trip was not planned in advance. We arrived in Zim and had not seen any rhino(one of the guys traveling with us was obsessed with seeing the big 5 and the rhino was the only one left)so he had the hotel arrange it. I had no idea it was a rhino 'walk' till we arrived. I would have been perfectly happy to stay in the vehicle. Our guide was very good however he was not feeling well at all and had excused himself to go into the bush and relieve himself. He left us with a second guide who did not speak english(he had the gun, which we were later told he would NEVER use on a rhino, he did not even attempt to draw it during the charge, we have it on video). The charge happened while we were alone with the non-english speaking guide. Not sure I would recommend this tour, the entire thing had an 'edge' of uneasiness to it. We did another unscheduled night game drive in Zambia and our guide took us to see their black rhinos(we were charged by a white or wide lipped one) They were contained in pens and were so tame we could pet them. They were being groomed for a rhino walk experience to open later this year(that park did lion walks as well). They actually liked to be petted on their horns-so tame and there was no fear at all while in their presence.

Much more to come, I should probably start at the beginning....
