From Nairobi to Ngorongoro Conservation area

Hello everybody,
I'm planning a trip for My boyfriend's birthday in the end if may. It's gonna be a surprise, He doesn't know anything so i can't Ask him advices... I need your help! I've booked the flight to Nairobi And i'd like to go straight to Ngorongoro by car.
Do you know how And where we can enter in Tanzania? I wanna rent a car in Nairobi And drive by ourself. I'm wondering how much the car fee is to enter in Tanzania And how long does the trip take from Nairobi to Ngorongoro.
My plan is to go from Nairobi to Ngorongoro, Then enter the serengeti And getting out from the the north so that we can go back to Nairobi.

Any suggestions are more than welcome
Thank you very much!
Gio

I don't know how much help I can be other than to advise you hire a guide.

When went to the crater, we flew into Arusha. It will be quite a drive from Nairobi. Even if you felt comfortable driving there, its quite difficult to drive down and back up, especially if its foggy or raining. One of the best cost effective services in Tanzania are hired guides with 4x4s, I would suggest you hire a guide at least for the Serengeti

Anyways check the routes to enter Tanzania, when we went overland our route was way over by Lake Victoria because we were the Western Serengeti for the migration. There is a crossing at Namanga, I would guess you would find this webpage helpful

Hi Gio

You should go through Namanga Border to Arusha.
my suggestion is to take a shuttle to Arusha and hire a car (4X4) there. this way you avoid the procedures, which may take (too) long, to register a Kenyan car in Tanzania.
another idea is to fly over.

i second Frank- it is recommended to take a driver-guide. there are several good reasons to it:
this way you'll see a lot more than on your own.
Serengeti needs good navigating skills of an experienced driver-guide
if you hire a guide, the chances are you'll end up with a better car

i can recommend you some good guides

My advice take a guide it will make life very easy for you. Land in Nairobi, then take the comfortable bus shuttles or flights to Arusha and begin the safari from there

The Best cost effective option is to take a shuttle from Nairobi via Namanga to Arusha.
Then higher 4 x 4 Vehicle with an Experience driver Guide to Ngorongoro and Serengeti National Parks then drive back to Arusha, then take a shuttle to Nairobi.

Take a shuttle from Nairobi to Arusha, Then hire 4X4 Land Cruiser with Pop up roof with a Guide then drive to Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti park and come back to Arusha, then take a shuttle to Nairobi.

It's too bad that you already booked roundtrip flights to/from Nairobi. If your destinations are in Tanzania, you should have booked into Tanzania (JRO). Also, at what point will you tell your boyfriend about this trip. To cross from Kenya to Tanzania, you may be asked to show proof of Yellow Fever vaccine which is a requirement to enter TZ after being in Kenya. You and he should also be vaccinated for Typhoid and be up to date on all your other vaccines such as TDap, Hep A, Hep B. Last, you need an antimalarial medication. If you fly directly from NBO to Arusha, you can avoid the Yellow Fever vaccine requirement.

I don't know what country your passport is for but for most, these two countries require entry Visas. You cannot just fly off to Africa at the last minute. Planning is required.
