Has anyone fished the Seychelles? We are probably going to be there after Africa in April/May, and we'd like to do some fishing. Any information about your experiences with fishing, guides, etc would be appreciated. Thanks,

I'm going to the Seychelles Feb. 23 - March 5,06 (catamaran) and have been cruising around this forum lately asking questions about the Seychelles. If you put my name in you'll find a few responses from people who have success fishing in the Seychelle waters. I'm told that the fish a abundant - I as well, plan on throwing a line in - someone else has to clean though. Hope that helps.

Also would like to do some big-game fishing in the Seychelles. Trying to find out the price of some top boats and which is the best season for billfish. Mauritius has a stop on the WBS (World Billfish Series), perhaps they will have better fishing. Check out their website, I suspect whatever date the tournament is, that's a good time for fishing.

Good big game fishing in Seychelles is easily found around the inner islands; boats are available at the Marine Charter in Victoria and at the horbour on Praslin. There may be a boat or two on La Digue for charter. Rates are slightly higher than world averages, but not exhorbitant (notwithstanding any new fuel surcharges and costs). Some of the outer islands (Denis, Fregate, Desroches and, maybe, Alphonse) also have deep sea fishing boats available. If I recall correctly www.sey.net has a fishing calendar.

Fly fishing is not all that good around the inner islands and you need to get to Denis or Alphonse for guide and boat. Of course, the best is at Farquhar, Cosmoledo and the Aldabra area but that can only be done on weekly charters; the Indian Ocean Explorer is one of several that goes there and they charter out to flyfishing shops which then sell to individuals. You should be able to write them (www.ioexplorer.com) to get the name of those shops.

We were there for a week this past March and I fished for about 2.5 days of our stay. Lots of success - we caught loads of bonito and yellow-fin (great for sashimi). Also caught the occassional barracuda and wahoo, plus one 50-kg sailfish. They do also catch Marlin, but you may have to get a boat large enough to head out farther.

We released everything we caught save for one yellow-fin, which we kept and enjoyed at every meal for the next day and a-half. Ahhh... sashimi at breakfast, now that was a holiday!

Most of our success came around the waters off Silhouette Island.

thanks for the information. does anyone know if it is possible to do day trips to denis or alphonse or is it necessary to stay there in order to fly fish the flats?

No, there's only one roundtrip flight a day to each of them so you need to stay at least one night. On Alphonse they have a 3 night minimum stay requirement.

I believe you can fish there without staying but the problem then is getting there which would take chartering a boat. A day trip to Denis would be marginally "do-able" but would be a very long day.

The overnight/multiple days all-inclusive stays at the flats resorts are a bit more than our budget will accommodate after safari, so I guess we'll forego flats fishing. Are there any boat operators anyone can recommend out of Mahe or La Digue for blue water fishing (not fly fishing)?

Fregate Island has 7 days minimum stay and two years ago we paid $1700.00 per night for a villa. I bet those prices are higher today so I guess this is not what you are looking for.
