Uhhhh, as requested, I did my own research (properly) and reached my own conclusions. It didn't take long since the hunting community and the Namibian press discusses this quite openly and there is quite a clear historical trail of stories to follow; most of which are very consistent. I am sure many of you have done so already, but just in case you haven't ....

This is not anti-hunting or anti-Namibia, although it is certianly pro neither.

1. There IS an official moratorium on issuing new cheetah and leopard hunting PERMITS in Namibia at the moment. However, there is probably still hunting going on as a lot of permits were purchased before the moratorium came into effect.
2. The moratorium will be lifted just as soon as new cheetah and leopard hunting regulations are issued.
3. The leopard moratorium was said to have started when Namibia reached its limit on exports of leopard trophies allowed under CITES fairly early in 2009. However, the reality appears to be that a huge number of leopard hunting permits had been purchased in 2008 and 2009 and in some areas whole populations of leopard and cheetah were being wiped out (this from hunting sources). Illegal hunting was also an issue.
4. Unregulated hunting operators (this from hunting soureces, so let's assume they weren't all unregulated, and call them 'unethical') were running leopard and cheetah hunts with dogs, as well as canned hunts - in some cases canned leopard hunts with dogs (a new low indeed). The canned hunts with dogs are attributed to South African operators
5. The cheetah moratorium seems to have been added (nothing I found as to why but can assume same as for leopards) and new regulations on hunting (which in case you wondered may limit the number of leopard permits to a few hundred a year... maybe less) willl cover both.
6 As soon as the new regulations are made law cheetah and leopard hunting will resume. It is possible (but nor certain) that the hunting of cheetah with dogs and other practices that do not comprise what hunters call "fair chase" will be banned. However, I stress that the level of concern in Namibia is so extreme that this is not certain.
7. Prices for hunts on web sites are likely there because permits issued before the moratorium are still valid, because the operators hope hunting can resume as soon as April, or because they are going to hunt the animals illegally.

Hunting Leopard in 2009 will continue as planned, provided the Outfitter or Hunting Professional has a valid permit which specifies the following: Name of client; Name of Hunting Guide or PH who will personally guide the client throughout the hunt; Valid date, and huntable species. Confronted with this fact, the old hunter just smirked. “What does it help to say on paper the season is closed when over 290 leopard permits are still active. This year’s damage will not be undone in one or two years.”

I opened a new thread in order to get my message out and meet duckduck's demand for clarification very openly.

The number of permits provided in 2008 and 2009 - both leopard AND cheetah - were extraordinarly high though to provide trophies but still stick with a "moratorium" which isn't worth the paper on which it is written.

Also confirmed by AGA "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Artenschutz" in Germany which closely works with Cheetah Conservation Fund.

My "facts" remain not only unchamnged but confirmed!

Please read carefully as obviously "surkamp" and "duckduck" won't get tired to convince readers of the opposite on what is going on in Nambia regarding unethical hunting.

I consider it ESSENTIAL that a forum which is particularly also dedicated to photographic safaris allows unfiltered, well researched posts - even if that does not comply with the expectations of a minority - I sincerely hope trophy hunters, or those who promote/support that bloody "sport", are in the minority here.

I must confess that I had bever cobceuved this forum ti be dedicared to photographic, I had always thought of it as being a forum in wch many posters in particular TRAVEL AGENTS dispensed false information designed to boost thjere business.

As always SPASSVOGELL posts nonsense, there has been no missreading on my part just try to check out the Mamibian Wildlife Authority site and see if this is true or not.

Your totally prejudice shines through one can only wonder what you think of your home countries colonisation of this country?

I really do not care if people boycott Namibia as it means that less people like the divine pippa wiill be ther spoliing my holiday.

There's a lot more to this issue than hunting or not hunting. As a conservationist, naturalist and hunter, I can tell you that, if hunting is managed properly, it is beneficial to both wildlife numbers and sustainability. Case in point: one of only countries in the region, Kenya, has outlawed hunting for over thirty years, yet their wildlife numbers are the lowest in the region. If hunting is outlawwed, large landowners have no incentive to protect the wildlife - so an entire herd would be lost to development or farming. Kill a few, save hundreds. Try to save hundreds without huting, and you'll lose the entire herd.
