Ethiopia
I'm thinking of going to Ethiopia in March for about 2 weeks. There is so much to pack into such a short time, but that is the way it has to be. My main interest is visiting several tribes in the Omo Valley region. Specifically the Mursi, Surga, Karo, Bumi and Hamer. I am also interested in checking out some churches/monasteries north of Addis. Unfortunately for me, I habe to either hire a car/driver/guide or take "luxury" buses where available because I am very very claustrophobic and can't handle flying within Ethiopia. This is unfortunate because it will add many days to my itinerary.
I would appreciate some recommendations on tour companies as well as places I MUST see and perhaps even places overhyped that should be avoided.
Thanks so much, and happy holidaze!

Dear Carol,
Two weeks seems a reasonably enough time to explore the tribes of the South Omo region. The trips to the south usually run between 8-12days and you should be able to comfortably explore the valley in two weeks. This is of course with a tour vehicle (from budget to luxury), not a public transport, which in fact is almost non existent and unreliable in this part of Ethiopia.
I would have been more than happy to help you suggest a few itineraries and a price quote. But unfortunately, I am out of the country at the moment. I; however, have no hesitation in recommending you contact a Steve in Addis Ababa at [email protected]. He is a reliable friend and partner of mine and we organise a number of tours across Ethiopia. I have recently sent him a group and I am quite happy with his services. Please feel free to email him as soon as you can.
And also, let me know if you have any more questions.
Best wishes,
Ash ([email protected])

Dear Carol
I really was trying to be helpful and recommending a company I work with for my own groups, not work for. Anyway,Point taken wholeheartedly! I hope you find what you're looking for and have a great time in Ethiopia.
Cheers

I think the only way to travel is with a guide. They help negotiate with the tribespeople as they are now too savvy about photographers. And it is difficult finding the villages. Ethiopian air is no more claustrophobic than any U S regional airline! Fly to Abu Minch and save a day of difficult driving
I traveled alone with 12 people I had never met before and had a great time. I can recommend the company if you email me! They also arrange private tours
